In a quest to drop weight at low cost while remaining SCCA SII Stock legal and not blast away what's left of my hearing, Pinecone, BahnBaum, John V and I installed a homebrew exhaust system on my RX-8 yesterday in the Team WTF?! garage facilities (aka, Pinecone's kick-ass garage).

It's based on the 16" Borla XR-1 Racing Muffler and uses a couple of bends, all three parts sourced from Summit Racing. I also bought a used OE midpipe to cut up so I could save the entire stock system aft of the cat for easy reinstallation in the future.

Altogether, it feels like the homebrew system saves ~20 pounds over the OE system. Butt dyno says no power difference (GTech and weather did not cooperate to allow for back to back testing) and based on other "better engineered" systems and recorded dynos with just straight pipe after the cat, I doubt that that there is much of a difference of more than +/- a couple HP.

I want to thank everyone here that helped, especially Pinecone for allowing us the use of his garage, lift, tools and welding ability.

Anyway...A few pics here (http://teamwtf.org/index.php?set_albumName=album60&option=com_gallery &Itemid=78&include=view_album.php)...

I do too, if I ever end up with a modern BMW (doubtful) I'd have to buy one.

Heh, you may have the upper hand now, but I'd like to see you try to obtain a DIS+/GT1 one day. :flame:

Mazda calls it "DSC" too, but their icon is different.

I actually find myself contemplating (half-seriously) a stripper E90 325i with the plate "DSC OFF." :dunno:

LOL. I just got a set of 245/40/17 S05's for Glenn Ty. $800. Let me know if you're serious.

And damn you Cap'n Morgan + Clyde for beating me to the E46 M3 punchline.

it's been such a running joke (the e46m3 exhaust thing), i couldn't help baiting them.

i was just surprised that JeSTer didn't jump in sooner about it.

that's pretty cool what you guys did in just one day.

Had the organizer's shit been somewhat together, it would have been less than half a day.

Sounds like it would have been a good opportunity to drive down there for pointing and snickering.

Let me know when another such opportunity arises. :)
