the next M3 looks fat.

the next RS6 looks.....really tame...funny how it specs out exactly the same as the e60m5.

GT3 uses a "massaged 3.8 911 Carrera S engine"?

So that's no motorsport block, then?

Someone's gonna be pissed.

That M3 has some ridiculous wheel flares. I really hope that mask on the rear is a lot bigger that needed because the rear looks enormous. I still expect to be dissapointed, though the engine I'm sure will kick ass.

The flares on the M3 seem like motorsport wide-body add-ons. The Cayman flares are integrated into the design the way the 911 and exotics do it.

Nothing wrong with it, but it is a little ridiculous for BMW to try so hard to give the M3 the appearance of a race-ready car when it is far from it in stock form. Now, if they want to do that on the CSL, that's fine.

The issue is that the flares are very similar to the E46's. ROunded doesn't work on any Bangled vehicle, but I'd bet that something more akin to the E30 M3 flares would work better.

M3 looks horrible. Hope it's b/c of the cladding.

I agree with bonoboy - the GT3 nose looks much worse than the Elise nose. At least the Elise is kind of cute.

I agree. The GT3 nost looks very tacked on.

The Elise looks competely different in person than it does in pictures. I hate it in pictures but it's really beautiful in person.

i still prefer the GT3 nose.

i find a lot of the elise styling excessive --i prefer the cleaner looks of the solstice or the sky.

most of the reason i prefer the GT3 nose is that i would bet most of that is actually functional, especially as speeds increase.

everything on the front end of the elise is functional

OT: This reminds me...

Yesterday, on my way home, in a relatively upscale suburban town, I saw what seemd like a bone-stock Civic except it had a BMW roundel on the hood. WTF? I just don't understand why someone would do this.

There you go. Except this clown I saw just tacked it on, with the Honda emblem still a few inches below it.

The dude from your link is just out of his mind. Pretty funny though. :)

aero work on the elise only has to be good for 155mph; the GT3 has to be aerodynamically useful at least up to 190mph.

major difference? not likely --but it does tend to mean that much more thought and simulation and testing has to go into the GT3 kit. the elise reigns supreme because it is light and tossable but the GT3 is a high speed track monster with a wide open top end.

it reflects the differences in their product focus, but it manifests itself in how different their front ends are.

yeah, but you said most of the reason you preferred the GT3 because the front end is functional--implying that the elise's was not.

since the elise is functional too, this makes your point moot.

actually, it's somehow (academically) more pleasing to ponder the front end of a car that is engineered to be rock steady at 190mph --ones that can go 155mph are really not that exciting. think about it. your run of the mill m3 and even ZHPs can go that fast. so, that the elise front end is functional is a broad swath of cars that include E-class, 3 series, etc --this definition of functional is more akin to saying that the H2 or H3 front end is NOT functional, but most other cars are.

the GT3 is really in a whole other class of car. because of its prodigious top end, it really needs aero work. it's arguable how necessary and how functional the elise actually has to be if it tops out at 150mph. that was my main point.

I really really hope that the M64 will stay in the 997 line, now that my SO has verbally committed herself to a GT2 for me. :)

Why bother? Used GT3 can be had on toadfly and ebay for under 95k.

That is the best handling 911 variant, if Walter Röhrl is to be believed.

best handling, of course, being very relative.

:)

(even the boxster S can post similar laptimes to the base 997 on most tracks March Issue of Evo).
