That's the best episode of Top Gear I've ever seen.

I want one.

Wow, where have you been (http://forums.carmudgeons.com/viewtopic.php?t=3789&start=30)? :P

(It's awesome, but I still want a motorcycle)

Best. Segment. Ever.

(but yes, I want the bike)

Can you imagine hitting anything in that thing? I mean, a squirrel might take out your leg for two months.

wow... Incredible.

Imagine a version of that with a body and windscreen? I wonder if the aerodynamics would offset the extra weight?

And I can't wait to start watching the new series of Top Gear in a couple weeks (It returns to BBC World around May 22). And it will be on a real TV since our Canadian sat TV service carries BBC World

Check out the used section. http://www.arielmotor.co.uk/04/frames.htm

One of the potential buyers was in the US.

I've heard of the Ariel Atom before, but I never knew how quick it was until now. That thing is cool.

...and I've just been thinking recently that go-karts are probably a much better answer than a track car if I want to have fun on a track...

I think which is "more fun" depends on your goals. If you want to learn car control, and experiment with the cars handling limits, then in some sense a car that reaches its limits at lower speeds is more fun.

If you just want to go really freaking fast and pull high G corners, then carts (or an atom) probably are more fun.

The Atom also (reportedly, and I would not doubt it for a moment) has loads and loads of "feel", way beyond even most sporting cars - which is difficult to express in objective terms but surely that is a useful trait for your foremost stated goals, is it not?

Just get the 15-inch wheels with all-seasons if you are concerned about experimenting with the handling limits. But on going "really freaking fast", IIRC even the lowliest Atom has a 0-60 time of around 5 seconds. Maybe you should also add ballast or a restrictor plate? :P

That would suck. But not as much as hitting something on that bike.

Yeah, but then you wouldn't get the effect of having the skin on your face deformed by the force of the head wind :P

But at least I'd have a helmet on a bike. Of course, one really should get a helmet for the Atom.

I don't think I'd drive it very far without one.

Holy crap that thing would be fun to autocross. You might even be able to beat the Lotus 7s.

Autocross would be fun. So would closing off part of Skyline Drive and going at it, if I were even moderately skilled at driving. In fact, I'm not sure that I'd want to drive one on anything but a closed road surface.

I'd miss that part... but wouldn't miss the bugs. Then again, if they made the windscreen removable (like the '89 Porsche 911 Speedster) you could have it both ways
