View Full Version : Any idea how much to swap a 6sp into an e39 540iT?

Due to some recent pee-stick discoveries, the wagon is going to become a major family topic of discussion much sooner than I planned. I'm just kicking this idea around and wondered if anyone had an order of magnitude cost on a transmission swap? What problems could this swap lead to?

I looked at, but didn't drive, a legacy (list price $31,9xx?) and Mazda 6 wagon yesterday. The Subie was well put together, but seemed expensive and I didn't like the Mazda all that much. I like the idea of the used b5 s4 avant, but all the audi dealerships I've dealt with in my area are horrible, and I'd expect maintenance to be a mess. I think I'd miss the performance stepdown from the m3 to a 3 or 525iT too much. To me a 540iT w/ a manual would be perfect (actually the Rogue M3T would be perfect, but that seems way too complicated).

Call VAC Motorsports. They'd know.

Were there no std. tranny 540iTs sold in the US?

I think it's generally around $9K.

There really is no difference engine/tranny-wise between an E38 740i and an E39 540i/iT.

Wow, definitely more than I can justify, thanks for the info. I had done a quick search this morning before posting and had seen ~$2k numbers through a couple of site postings. Either that was parts only, or there's a big disconnect. The only thing I can think of is the e38 may need a custom driveshaft for the manual swap that an e39 may not (because of the standard 6sp in the sedan? If this becomes anything more than a brainless idea, I'll give VAC a call.
