While installing a new gas pedal in my E30, I discovered that my carpet was wet. You couldn't feel it from the top, but only if you stuck your fingers underneath. It was soaked.
After searching, I found a common drain hose that clogs and causes this problem. It's a little "elephant trunk" drain under the hood coming out of the firewall on the passenger side. Mine was caked with dirt, just like this guy's. http://www.r3vlimited.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9536
