The Seattle and Bellevue dealers want you to put down money and order a car before you can even test drive an M3...and I want to try out an SMG trans.....Any Suggestions ??? I'm wondering if perhaps I can find a used one somewhere and could wrangle a test drive ?????

Go to a few local driving schools, someone is bound to bring their SMG-II equipped M3 with them...And if it was an instructor, ask him if you can try it out in the parking lot or surface street with the owner riding in the car.

It would really help if you have a friend or a friend of a friend that has one.

Since the dealers won't let ya try one I'd get with someone who owns one and beg.

Ask on the Puget Sound board - I'm sure someone there would be willing to lend.

What are you thinking of now, man? :D

There was a red '02 SMG Equipped M3 at Spokane this weekend attending the 2 day high perf driving class....I talked to him quite a bit but despite some none too subtle hints he never offered even a ride along.....

I'm daydreaming that perhaps I could get an e46 M3 some day and really want to know if the SMG is the way to go.....I did drive one fellow's '02 330i 5 speed coupe and the tranny felt very notchy and precise....there would be little chance of as big money downshift screw up with that notchy/precise gated 330i trans.....

Never do business with a dealer that wont let you test drive a car. You can come in to our place and drive any car we have so long as it isn't sold and you have at least some interest in buying a car.

If you come out to RI, I'll find an SMG M3 for you to drive.

Did you ask Fife?

None of the dealers will let ya test one out...even me and I got some good connections at Northwest.

There is still a wait list on the cars so the only ones in the dealer are "owned" but not delivered.

Keep your eyes out for a trade in possibly

Dealers still have M3 waiting lists? We've got M3s sitting on our lot. I guess location makes a big difference.

Yeah, dealers in DC are offering discounts on new M3s (or so I'm told), and are dealing pretty aggressively on moderately used ones. The days of the 10K markup are long gone, though they are still leery of doing test drives, even in used cars.

Test drive one at a Vancouver/North Vancouver/Richmond dealership. They seem to be a lot more causal about those things here.
Just call ahead to be sure that there is a M3 SMG in stock.

The '02 is going through recon/service this week. I'll let you know when it's ready.

Oh, and would your dad like an '01 740iL, Anthracite, Sport Wheels, Comfort Seats and 41,000 miles? Like I said the other day, we get new inventory all the time. ;)

We got three of them in last week, one exactly as you mention. However, both black ones were sold the same day they came in. We currently have a Mystic Blue coupe (6 speed) in stock.

The following combos are on order:
0416-Carbon Black Metallic N5ZM-Cinnamon Leather
0354-Titanium Silver Metallic N5SW-Black Leather
0300-Alpine White N5ZM-Cinnamon Leather
0668-Jet Black N5SW-Black Leather

In Production:
0300-Alpine White N5ZM-Cinnamon Leather

In Inventory:
0A07-Mystic Blue Metallic N5SW-Black Leather

All these cars are available. I guess there's no love for M3s in New England a few months before winter.

Carbon black, actually, which is even better. More interesting than jet black. CB/Cinn is definitely my #1 choice.

My car was in for the first oil change and my dealer had a new 530 in black/auburn. Now that is a sweet combo. I couldn't stop staring at it.

Won't the dealer let you test drive a CPO e46 M3 with SMGII? I was at Century West BMW in North H'wood a few weeks ago, and they had quite a few CPO M cars for sale. I would think you could test drive one of them if your dealer also had some CPO M3's on the lot?

I'm glad my salesman wasn't there at the time...he probably could have talked me into the CPO'd M3 'vert in silver they had sitting there...it was SWEET and manual!

If you're willing to consider used, you can save a bunch of money, get the car immediately (Fife says they have a 6 month wait for new), and test drives are easier.

I've just been through a big test drive / research excercise about SSG and SMG II, and my conclusion was that SSG (in Z4 and 330i) is very good, and SMG II (in M3) is perhaps even better. I love my E36 328i, but I'm planning on buying a new 330i just to get the SSG.
