What's the big deal with the car coming early? BMW has done this many times before: in fact, I remember that the 2000 and 2001 7-series came out very early in the year, too. I don't remember the release of the '99, but that might have been early, too. And, the 2000 3-series was released in June '99. And the '04 3er coupe and convertible was released in April 2003. I can go on and on.

So, my point is, I don't see the link between poor sales and launching the car in April instead of September. I just think that they want to have a more complete, fresh lineup going into the traditionally strong summer months (new 3, 2006 5-series, 2006 7-series)

Oh, if they went ahead and released it in September, the it-ain't-what-it-used-to-be gang would still dig up a negative spin. :P

that the "mid-cycle freshening" is so drastic speaks volumes.

i don't have to spin that.

every single professional in the automotive industry saw this immediately and credit BMW for not living in denial for too long.

big deal. "we" were right. end of story.

Just amusing...it should have come sooner. It is going to kill the resale on my parents 03 745iL (85XX CPO miles) Owned it for 2 months and it has already take a $6K hit but, 7-Series resale values have always sucked.

You are aware that there is no financial benefit from a CPO '02 or '03 745, right? They all have the full 6 year/100k warranty (not CPO, but full warranty) from BMWNA. In that regard, your parent's car has the same coverage as any other '02 or '03 out there.

As part of an effort to promote good will and keep happy BMW customers, BMW came out with a pretty elaborate remarketing strategy. Part of it includes upgrading ALL 2002 and 2003 models to a full 6 year/100k mile warranty-- not just CPO coverage, but full warranty coverage. The other parts include $1500 incentives for original owners of 2002 and 2003 cars to put towards the purchase of any 2005 or 2006 V8/V12-powered BMW (545, 550, 645, 650, X5 4.4, 7-series). They also have a pull ahead to get people out of their leases on these cars early to get into new cars, plus a bunch of penalty waivers for their end of lease charges.

credit to BMW for taking care of its customers, too.

again, it's (i'm reading way too much into this) customer loyalty is the main issue. but to me, i interpret it as a very important demographic of buyer that likely has multiple bmw's. they're wise about this.

but it also says to me that they recognize that the engine upgrade and the exterior upgrade is so drastic that first gen. people will feel completely hosed. completely. and they're trying to keep them in the fold and not make them feel silly for having invested in the "edgy" styling.

now, if they could just retouch up the new 5er, i could not smile sheepishly when someone asks me about a new BMW.

Loyalty is the big thing here. I really think that they are doing all that they can to keep people happy with BMW and to keep them buying the cars. You are right that this buyer is one that has likely had other BMWs before, will likely by more BMWs, and might even currently own more than one. These problems piss them off, and BMW wants to make it right before they abandon ship.

The whole point of this is not that they're worried about the facelift. In fact, I don't think that's a big concern. I think that they just wanted to address the problems and come up with a satisfactory fix, because these cars start coming off-lease in large numbers in April, and BMW wants to be prepared and wants to give these people another reason to "give BMW another shot".
