That cupholder is frigging stupid. Why have a cupholder that dumps liquid all over the dash? Why is that a good idea?
The current E46 holders are among the best I've used in any car. They are simple and hold nearly any cup securely. They are also very clever, with replaceable rubber bands providing tension rather than the plastic bits that did so in the similar E36 design.
Why get rid of such a good design?
Oh, right.
To make room for iDrive.
Grr.

I've never been particularly thrilled with the E46 cuphoders (although they are better than the beverage warmers in the RX-8). Of all the cars that I've owned or driven extensively, my favorite cupholder (which wasn't evena cupholder) was in the 1987-1993 Mustangs. Pop whatever drink you want between the parking brake and the passenger seat. Everything from a little water bottle to whatever size Big Gulp was the really fat one fit snugly and securely...and didn't get in the way of shifting, steering, or anything else. No drips, no runs, no errors.
The cupholders in the dash are stupid ass hell! Also ruins what possibly could be a clean dash.
BTW, after reviewing these pics it only confirms the cold, hard fact that I will never purchase a E90. :vomit:
My cupholder is basically just a storage area. I put my cell phone in there. My wife will sometimes use it, but that is maybe 1% of the time. I don't care for cupholders. I don't drink and drive. :D

Hmm... Ultra-tight clearances, can't see the ground, PITA to work on... yup, it's a modern car.
All-important electronics module behind shock tower where 99% of my time will be spent... yup, it's a modern BMW.
*Sigh*
But on the positive side, it'll be less ugly than the masses of E60/E65's currently populating the training area.

Well, it's certainly the best looking interior since the E46. I don't use cupholders unless there's another human in the car with me to fill that role, so that's not much of a concern. Shrug...looks like the new 3 is going to be a decent car.

e60 and e65 have the same cupholders... cost cutting at its worst...

Really makes you notice the bastardization of the kidneys over time... I can understand stretching them a bit, but keep the shape recognizable as BMW...
By the way what's with the black & white mirror behind the driver's side mirror of the e90? Lookslike whoever was photoshopping was trying to line the 2 cars up / resize 2 photos and left part of the e21 in...

Why do you need a cupholder? :dunno:
You can clearly see that it's an after thought because most Germans just don't care about such a stupid thing.
It is a German car designed for German drivnig conditions, after all. And that is why I love German cars. :D
The day they start designing German cars with stupid 70mph speed limit and cupholders as their primary parameters is the day that I stop buying German cars.

I saw the E90 in person and it does look quite good. The E30, E36, and E46, and even the M3 is beginning to looked dated.
I have no doubt the coupe will look even better, and I can't wait to see what the E90 M3 will look like. :D

But if it's good enough for Bill Auberlin, it must be good enough for the rest of us.
No?
I agree w/ the disdain for cupholders, but I will say this: if you're going to make and sell a cupholder, at least make it a good one.
