View Full Version : Is it me, or is this a pretty good deal?

The thing is barely three years old and it is being offered for roughly half what it cost new with extended warranty?
I'm going to drag my wife out there for a test drive. It is only 3 miles away from my house.
Of course, for the same price you could have a brand new LL Bean Outback.
What IS IT with you people and subarus? If you can honestly compare a subaru with a frikin 540i wagon with a straight face, then you should by the subaru and leave the 540 for someone who will appreciate it. For love of . . .
Kbb says retail price of 37k. Didn't give me the option to guess at condition for some reason.

yeah. the price seems low to me --i'd be seriously worried about repaired damage that they are willing to disclose to sell it at that price.
hey man, you won't see me compare subies to BMWs. they're clearly not in the same class of car. it's just that to me, i'd have more fun driving an outback XT (turbo motor) with the 5 speed manual than i would enjoy driving the 540iT. and obviously, both with snow tires, the nod still goes to the AWD vehicle.
mbr likes some luxe so i think the CPO car is a good match. i could not care less about luxe these days.

The reason the car looks good is that we have a slushy requirement and even though it is used, with the CPO warranty, it ends up having a better warranty than a new Outback.
And CLEARLY the 540iT is the far superior vehicle in everyway except one. AWD. I can live with a good set of blizzaks though. If it were up to me, it would be a no-brainer towards the 540iT. The wife also wants some luxury since I opted for "full sport" on the 330i.
I want her to test drive it this weekedn so she can see just how awesome it is.
Unfortunately things have not changed and we still cannot afford a 30K family car now. But it definitely will make me look at a 540iT when we can. That said, I just saw a few '98-'99 MB E320 4-matic wagons going for under 20K.
I'm still not sure what to do about the 190E. To fix it or not to fix it, that is the question.

What IS IT with you people and subarus?
What IS IT with these people and posting 80gazillion character URLs that strech from here to the next office so I can't fucking bloddy read the goddamn page without scrolling left and right like an idiot.
embed those long ass links damnit!

How do you do it? I tried but I did not find anything obvious on the posting screen. Sorry. I know it is annoying.
Thanks.
I'd much rather have the 540iT than a new Outback. With a set of snow tires, and the auto trans, I doubt that you'd have any trouble in the snow.

I know. It's funny, I always talk about how great AWD is, yet I have been driving nothing but RWD since I got my license and always got by ok in the snow. Not to say AWD wouldn't be great to have, but if I ever got into a dicey situation, it was rarely because my 2nd set of tirse wasn't powered. Usually it was stopping, and with winter tires that was almost entirely solved.
Right now we can afford a used wagon under $10K (with the inherent issues fo age and mileage and lot s of repairs), or something under 20K that financed wont be so hard to swallow. A $30K wagon is not an option right now, but it will be in ~18 months.
In the under 10K scenario we have an array of very-old German/Sweede wagons, or somewhat-old Outbacks.
In the under 20K range the above vehicles become 5 years newer.
I'm really not sure what to do. Then there is the idea of spending ~$2K and LOTS of time fixing my 190E so that it runs (hopefully - risky move) for another ~18 months until we get the 30k car.

Why is an automatic better in the snow? I think having a manual is better.
In addition, while no matter what, I'd always take a 540iT over any subaru product, with the amount of snow we have right now, I'd really like awd.

Next time I borrow the Jeep from my brother, you and I should go crashing through some snow banks with it. Then we'll try it with my Blizzak-shod M3 and see who gets stuck first.

I'm up for that.

I should've been more specific. it's easier to feather the throttle when starting from a dead stop. You can also start moving on ice without giving it any gas. Just take your foot off the brake.

Definitely, do it. Plowing through snow banks or navigating a muddy off-road trail in a good 4x4 like the Jeep or 4Runner is just as much fun as driving the twisties in a sports car. Maybe even more so.

The first part of that sounds like a lot of fun. The second part sounds like a good way to break off your lower bumper. And other various plastic parts underneath it.
Oh, and btw, snow tires don't do you any good if you pack enough snow under the car so it lifts the weight off the tires - ask me how I know.

Been there, done that.
More than once.
