I've done a 120 mile shot (one way) and back in the same day

Now I'm looking at a 340 mile leg drive with a return trip 2 or 3 days later.

I've got a sport-pack equipped 3. Is this car still a comfortable ride after 340 miles?

With this car: 317 miles, and it felt comfortable afterwards.

Longest I've ever driven in one shot was 500 miles in a Ford Mondeo station wagon, Stockholm to Aarhus DK, raining all the way. Still felt fine afterwards. I guess I just like to drive.

From Pittsburgh, PA to Eagan, MN (suburb of St. Paul), not sure how far that was... 1.3k miles?

According to the map, 880 miles, still a heck of a lot I think.

By myself? 1080 miles, from New Orleans, LA to W. Bloomfield, MI, coming home from college for Christmas in a 1991 Escort GT. I started at 10 PM, and it took about 20 hours. The worst part was arriving in Detroit in the middle of rush hour; you can't believe how bad it sucks to be stuck in a traffic jam after 19 hours on the road.

God, that trip sucked. By the end I was hallucinating. I still can't remember driving through half of Kentucky.

"By yourself"? Yes and no... by yourself in a Bimmer...
I guess there's no reason why it wouldn't be doable but I wish my wife could handle a clutch :(

I understand the hallucinating thing, though. I drove a '51 Chevy from Portland, OR to San Francisco in one shot at night. I honest-to-gosh don't remember parts of it. All I had were two 8 tracks: Who's Next and Stephen Stills' II

Longest road trip in a BMW so far is from DC to Charleston, SC--about 500 miles. Very comfortable. Both of my E46s (the 323Ci and the M3) have made superb highway cruisers.

Longest distance in the bimmer: LA to San Diego, approx 100 mies.

Longest distance in previous car: LA to San Jose, approx 360 miles.

Worst long distance run: Harrisburg to Pittsburgh PA driving back to college. Don't know the mileage, but this was 25-ish years ago, in a then quite old VW bug, stuffed to the gills with college crap for 2 people and this was the absolute first time ever that I had driven a stick. And because there was so much crap in the car, we were practically driving with our heads out the sun roof. Didn't touch another stick for about 5 years after that experience

Second worst long distance run: Returning home at the end of that year... 5 people in a rented Pontiac Bonneville, towing a fully loaded U-haul trailer.

In 2002, I drove from Seattle to Crater Lake, toured around the lake, and drove back to Seattle in one day. I stopped to pee and for lunch after the lake tour.

Started at 4 in the morning; came back after midnight.

This year, I spent the night down there before and after the day of the run. That's a much, much better way to go.

If you mean the longest without stopping at all, ~600 miles in a 1987 Corvette.

The most in 24 hours was about 1,500 miles.

Depending on what qualifies as a "stop" it's anywhere from about 3,000 miles to about 10,000.

I did Bakersfield to Sonoma in one day and back for my cousin's wedding, but not in the bimmer. Family rented a Ford Astrovan.

Did L.A. to Bakersfiend a few times in the Z3, that's about a 240 mi. round trip. Did the same run but stayed overnight a couple of years ago in the 323Ci for my aunt's funeral. :(

Baton Rouge to Katy, TX, ~300 miles in the MCS

in the M3, Austin to Dallas routinely, ~220 miles

I've also done Dallas to Houston and back in the same day, ~160 miles each way

My longest was somewhere between 400 and 500 miles.

I picked up my car at the Performance Center in SC and drove home in two days to MA. Drove the entire the Blue Ridge Highway, stopped in Gettysburg, toured there for the morning, and drove home.

About 750 miles - NYC to some no-name town west of Indianpolis, IN on I74. I drive out to Amanda's in Champaign, IL and back every month or two. That's about 850 miles one way. Normally I stop in Washington, PA which is roughly halfway, but sometimes I press on if I'm in a hurry to see her . I've driven this in the Talon, in an Explorer (rented while the Talon was in the body shop) and the 325xiT.

Down and around Crater Lake from Seattle (Bee yoo tee full pix R'Gal)
Orlando to NYC?

Ah, but... Bakersfield ("Buck Owens Way") to Sonoma?
That's close to what I'm doing: Pacifica to Tehachapi.

I *should* be going up to Crater lake...

I regularly drive from Seattle to Monterey in a day. ~970 miles each way. I've probably made that trek down and back upwards of 20 times in the last 17 years.

The quickest I've ever made that trip was in 13 hours. It's amazing how fast you go when your speedo doesn't work... :? I was averaging about 75mph for the entire trip (including stops...) and that was in the days of 55. Now that I'm married, I still can do the trip in a day but the stops just kill time (no comments ... ). It's about an 18 to 20 hour drive now if I can talk my wife into "one" day.

I was never uncomfortable with the 3er sport seats. Just make sure to review how you have it adjusted. Tweak it toward the "support" side of the support vs. short-term comfort balance.

Des Moines, Iowa to Burley, Idaho.

Was moving across country. Started at 6 am CST, ended up in Burley around 9 pm MST, so I guess I drove 16 hours straight by myself. Wife was smart and flew out herself first with the kid.

I am still suffering flashbacks, so to this day I cannot even bear to calculate that distance, but I think it's pretty far. Never again.

After my honorable discharge from the Army, I drove my 1988 Ford Ranger from Ft. Campbell, KY (Home of the 101st Airborne (Air Assault)....hooahh) to my former hometown of Berlin, NJ in one shot.

A distance of about 900 miles.

I drank so much Coke and took so much No-Doze that I started getting the heebie-jeebies. At one point, I thought the branches of some trees where going to reach down and pick me and my truck up off the road.

I just returned from a 1 week and 1850+ mile road trip from Atlanta to Key West. Of that, I drove all but ~300 miles. First day was the longest -- Atlanta to Palm Beach -- a little over 600 miles. 2nd day was shortest -- about 275 miles. Spent 3 nights in Key West, then headed to Orlando - about 400 miles for another 3 nights... Headed back home today -- just about 450 miles. Great trip!

Oh -- and I averaged about 29 mpg over the week

Longest single-driver trip I've done is about 750 miles about 3 times. The first was in a '94 VW Golf without cruise control (San Francisco to Flagstaff, AZ). The other 2 was a round trip from San Jose to Yarnel AZ (very small town ~90 miles NW of Phoenix) and back over Thanksgiving weekend in a '97 Accord...

Hayward CA to Albuquerque NM on the first leg of a two day trip back to the DFW area, about 1065 miles in 14.5 hours. When I crawled out of the car in ABQ I was exausted and was so stiff from sitting that I literally found it hard to walk for a few minutes. I got gas and walked around for a little bit every 300 - 350 miles during the trip but took no other breaks and just drank bottled water and ate oatmeal bars along the way. The M3 is actually a very fine long distance cruiser - the handling and speed of the car go a long way to make up for the very firm suspension - but this was about 5 hours too long in the car. I hope I am not called upon to do that again!

I tend to get gas on long trips, too. One of the reasons it's nice to do 'em in a convertible.

I have driven 1000 miles in one shot (no caffeine, no sleep, only stopping for gas/bathroom). I don't recommend it. But 340 miles is NOTHING; you should be fine in just about any car.

EDIT: According to mapquest, it was about 1070 miles. I drove from Kansas City back to Reston. Took me about 20 hours...parts of the drive were easily at 85 mph, but as I got more tired, my speed went down dramatically.

OK, I'm back.
340 miles down, 340 back.
Average freeway speed of between 80 and 95. Top speed: 110
26 miles to the gallon

Very comfortable. Had the thigh pads out and just cruised all day.
Evrything was roses until I hit a tire carcass and bent the fuck outta my rim.

I'd do it again, alright.

In one day? Denver to Reno. I didn't plan on going that far, but there was nowhere to stop in Nevada, so I just kept going. If I rember correctly, it was about 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. - in a Dodge Dynasty four cylinder company car. I blew a valve guide somewhere in the mountains and didn't bother to stop. Took a dealer in the bay area about a week to fix it - I drove a rented convertible mustang for the week. It was nice for a Chicago boy in March.

Longest in a bmw? The trip from Chicago to San Diego had some long days. I was never uncomfortable in that car. The e36, on the other hand, is not the best for long drives. The trip up to Bimmerfest (S.D. to Santa Barbra) left me sore and looking for a lumbar support.
