For those that aren't following along on the other board, I would like to point this thread (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85276), particularly, this post (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1049141&postcount=50).

I do not believe that if the challenge is accepted that it will lead to anyone changing their minds about anything. I do think that it would be a lot of fun for those involved and provide great fodder for future debate re: track days vs autocross.

The challenge has been laid down. Will Stuka rise to the occasion?

(I've sent him a PM and I sincerely hope that this challenge is taken in the context in which it is intended...a friendly one meant to further our fun in a common pursuit, even if our preferred methods are different.)

You know what, I never gave AutoX much thought before.

But if Stuka looks down on it so much, it must be worth trying out!

I'll do it just to do it, and I would hope that you will beat me by a large margin, since it will be my first (and I am sure the last) autox event.

Even in the impossible event of me being place anywhere out of the bottom, it still won't change my mind that autox sucks.

I sent you a PM with some of the quick and dirty general details.

Yes, it's at Qualcomm where the Chargers play and the Padres used to play.

I'd probably do better in the E30 anyway. :paranoid:

The idea is that hopefully, regardless of how well or poorly you do, you come away with a geater appreciation for it. If not, that's okay too.

And if you come down for it, it saves me from having to go beg for a codrive from a total stranger. :D

No. :(

This is just an excuse for a long weekend visit. It will be my first trip out there in 19 months.

When you get a chance, can you PM or e-mail me some when/where/how/etc. info so we can start planning the road trip for the SoCal gang. The only thing I know is that the event takes place the weekend of March 12 and 13 and it at Qualcomm Stadium. Does the autocross span both Saturday and Sunday? When do we actually have to be at the autocross course? Etc., etc., etc.

The following is the schedule for the El Paso National Tour. The San Diego schedule hasn't been published yet, but it should be pretty much the same (changing the dates to Friday March 11 - Sunday March 13).

Friday, February 25
11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Test & Tune Course/$2.00 per run (Tickets will be sold until 2:00 only)
5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Registration and Tech - Please bring your current driver's license, SCCA membership card, and Solo rulebook.

Saturday, February 26
7:00 am Event site open/Course open for walking
7:00 - 7:30 am Late check-in and tech (Pre-registered entrants only).
7:30 am Mandatory drivers' meeting
8:00 am Heat 1-5 competitions

Sunday, February 26
7:00 am Event site open/Course open for walking
8:00 am Heat 1-5 competition
4:30 p.m. (approx.) Awards Presentation (following Heat 5)

I'm trying to talk Stuka into coming down early enough on Friday to be able to do some practice runs during the Test & Tune session (which uses a short course that does not resemble the competition courses). Since he's never done an autocross, this would be extremely helpful for him (and make things smoother on Saturday morning by already having registration and tech already taken care of.

Each heat is comprised of several classes. They usually wait until just a few days before the event to determine the groupings so that the number of cars per heat is balanced as closely as possible. We could be running as early as 8am or as late as 3pm. We probably won't know until Wednesday, March 9. There are 5 heats on both Saturday and Sunday and the run order is usually (always?) the same both days. Each heat typically lasts 90-105 minutes, but it can vary quite a bit.

They try to get all the heats finished by about 4 or 5, but delays are not uncommon. It's not listed in the schedule, but the following day's course is usually open for walking the afternoon/evening before. If they are, it's worth waiting around for (and another reason to be there on Friday for those that are competing).

For entry to the site, you will have to sign a waiver (you don't need to be an SCCA member). I have no clue what parking will be like at Qualcomm, but I don't think it will be bad. If you guys are planning on staying a while and somoene has one of those portable tent things, it would be a good idea to bring it. Folding chairs too. Bottled water. Sunblock. Etc.

To watch you and Stuka battle it out, of course. Some of the other folks might even be signing up to run in the autocross, too.

Well, the more people there that you know, the easier the time passes.

Who?

Bob Tunnell. 4 time Solo II National Champion. 6 time ProSolo Champion.

When he hasn't won, he's been very, very, very close. If there was a BMW autocross god, he would be Him.

:? What's up with that forum? It says the thread has 315 replies... on 2 pages? And where's the pics?

EDIT: Never mind. That new forum format is annoying as hell.

After Stuka's "Because I shot off my big mouth online" quote, the most memorbale quote of the weekend belongs to Andy. At dinner on Saturday, "We have Mexican restaurants in Columbus, but they're not as authentic."

I laughed again when I just read that almost as hard as the first time. It was classic. There was also a "they're not too bad" comment thrown in too.

They have universities in Columbus, too, but they are also not as authentic.
