View Full Version : If you had $100K to spend, what cars would you buy?

I started a thread like this about 2 years ago at the 'fest. Given the new cars and new forum/people, I figured let's do it again.

Rules:

-Start with zero cars, you must begin from scratch.

-New and used cars apply as well as motorcycles.

-Prices are what you realistically could buy the cars for. And yes, sarafil sucks.

-Don't include TTL, etc (varies too much from state to state).

-You may list a car that has yet to come out but it must be a finished design and not speculation. As a penalty, you must use the upper end of the projected MSRP.

-You must be able to afford maintenance and upkeep for this fleet out of your current income (eventual if you are still in school/other short term situation).

That's all I can think of.

Go!

For reference: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42942

EDIT: I can't believe how painful you guys can be. It is edited now.

I need to actually pick but it's between these cars...

1) Corvette C6/Elise/E46M3/ '03 Boxster S = 46K

2) LL Bean Outback/ 00' E320W /??? = 30K

3) '02 330xi/ '05 Legacy GT/??? = 24K

I'll edit it later.

Does that include the money to spend on the garage itself? :)

No, wisegal, just the cars. ;)

Woo Hoo! I could have some fun with a $100K for the garage, but currently there is only one must have, an E39 M5.

For the "large, but not incredibly large" sum of $100k, I'd go more for breadth than depth.

Suzuki SV650: $3000
E30 M3: $15000
(Used) Grand Cherokee Laredo V8: $20000
1967 Corvette Roadster: $40000

With the rest of the money, I'd buy at least one of the below in rough shape and spend the rest of the money to restore them.

2002 tii
E28 M5
E34 M5
'67 Mustang
'69 Camaro
Old Beemers

The other option is to buy a '51 Mercury coupe and kustomize it.

Ideally I would buy daily drivers for myself and my wife, a tow rig and trailer, and a race car of some sort. Only problem is I don't have anywhere to park all of them. In the mean time I'm content with the M3 and my wife says she likes the Grand Cherokee so I guess we're set. So can I take the $100k and put it down on a new house?

Roadstergal

2002 SV650S, lowered, gel seat - $4.5K.
2005 F650GS, hard bags, gel seat, heated grips, ABS, hazards - $11K.
'95 Miata, rollbar, race seats, FM hood, stroker, JR intake and headers, FM exhaust, SSR comps and Azenis - $15Kish.
2005 Boulevard S40, saddlebags, windscreen - $5K.
2005 Baja with the bed extender and bike carrier and all of that crap - $23K.

And then I'll take my change...

Either of the following groups:

Group 1: MB SL500 (yes -- only 1 car in this group)

Group 2: '05 Boxster and MB E320 CDI (or perhaps an E320 Touring)

When you look at what we spent on our cars at the time we bought each of them, it totals just about $100K as well (Vert- 40, M3- 30, Saab- 25). But if I were starting from scratch today, I suspect things would turn out different.

But without a lot of thought, I'm not sure what I'd buy. A fun-ish family car and a fast sedan. Maybe a V70R and S4 plus a used Miata thrown in to be the occasional convertible for my wife. Or maybe an S4 Avant and an R32 leaving $30K left over to cover something like a used Boxster.

I'm just not sure.

I don't have anything?

Well, I'd need at least one car. I'd get a Corvette, Elise or an M3. Probably the M3 because of the practicality. I don't think that I need anything more.

I can use the rest for other purposes.

Edit: actually an E60 M5 would be perfect. That is a lot of money though...not that the others are inexpensive...

So many possibilities!

One possible scenario:

Used 2004 Porsche Boxster S, ~5k miles, approx. wholesale value: $41,000

Used 2004 545i 6-speed, ~10k miles, approx. wholesale value: $48,000

Remainder to spend on random items: $11,000

100K ain't what it used to be--I think for most of us, this question is not so much "what's your fantasy car collection" as it is "what would you buy if you increased your car buying budget by a small margin and had to buy everything for cash all at once?"

That said, I'd go with a slightly used CTS-V (40K), a Legacy GT wagon (30K), and the best used 911 I could find for 30K.

The swank cars are getting ridiculously expensive.

But if you compare the car you can get for under $20K these days to what you could get for that much 10 years ago... budget cars have come a long, long way.

I really don't know. This is pretty hard.

I'd say something like:

20K: Track car. Maybe E30 M3
30K: Car for wife (Acura TL???)
50K: Daily driver for me. E46 M3 :dunno:

Uh, asking us wafflers this kind of question is quite the hopeless endeavor...

And that's not enough for a Koenigseggeggeggegg/ZondaR/CGT, boo.

But here goes:

•Ariel Atom LHD with Type-R engine, BBK, and other assorted goodies: $50k

•Used Toyota pickup or domestic equivalent, $15k-ish? This purchase is necessitated by the above, so I'm not too picky, just something with weld-the-hood-shut reliability, or something to that effect.

•Honda S2000. I still want one, even when building a fleet from scratch. Most people report bargaining them down to around $30k, so that's what I'm going with.

(And I will only take Rio yellow :P )

That leaves roughly $5k on top of my current vehicle maintenance budget, for stuff like tires, brake pads, brake fluid, etc - all of which I'm sure would need attention due to spirited driving on the road and on the track/autox. I will also need a trailer/hitch for the Atom.

I already have to mess with broken down assorted POS where I work. The last thing I need/want is to go home and deal with more problems.

How about a nice 993 Turbo and a STi? That still leaves you 5 grand for mods and schools.

In inflation adjusted dollars, yes. In absolute terms? I don't know. True, cars like the Scion tc are pretty impressive values, and a 1.8T GTI just squeaks under the 20K mark (or at least it used to), but is the Scion tc any more impressive than, say, the 1989-91 Ford Probe GT?

dude: you realize how much slower the 993 turbo is than your 996tt, right?

and a lot more wobbly, too.

grass is greener and all of that, but the 996 chassis is a quantum leap forward from the 993 chassis, which was just a bastardized 964 chassis anyway.

Which brings me to the point of how some people here seem to IMO unrealistically disregard the realities of winter driving when making selections. But hey, if that's what you want to do, be my guest.

Obviously this exercise is biased toward single people, or people with no family, or at the very least people whose spouses' tastes in cars are in sync with theirs, but that is fine.

I know, but for 100K, you have to get two cars, and I can't think of a two car combo at this range better than an STI and a 993 Turbo.

I suppose a 01 Turbo plus a 95 M3 will work too.

was just trying to disabuse you of the car's mythos --it is like the e30m3. in its day, it was fantastic. and it still is a great car (any 993). but it's not the fantastic supersports car that could even be on par with today's model in strict performance terms.

intangibles? that's the personal side of the decision.
