If you can give up the aversion to gray. I think it looks sharp. Total garage queen:

That's pretty hot. I'm not a huge fan of gray, but in a convertible it might be the right call. I hope I don't end up regretting the navy interior in my car.

One of the best color combos for that car (along with titanium/cinnamon, imola/black, phoenix/black and jet fockin' black of course).

I just love the e46 interior in light gray.

Carbon/Grey is a really nice color combo. I know many people do not like the "baby blue" grey leather, but the shade of grey really works well on dark blue exteriors.

Plus, having a darker interior on a convertible is not a great idea. Any time I parked my car outside with the top down and got back in it after, I quickly learned just how hot black leather gets in the sun. Ouch!!

True. Then your only other alternative is tan, which gets gnarly even faster than gray. We had tan on the Z.

Of course if TD gets this car we will be total twinkies. It's a "carbon" copy of mine--carbon instead of jet black, and shy of my mileage by 20k miles (which I will envy). Also has CWP instead of just heated seats and it has PDC, which I wanted. Otherwise, it's a twin brother.

It is a sign of my advancing age that it took me a while this morning to remember if I had a gray interior in my '02 M3.

I think I did.

It was fine, really. I mean, you aren't going to write songs about it, and Cinnamon remains hands-down a nicer and more interesting choice, but the gray is perfectly nice. It was nicer in the summer than the black leather I had in the E36 M3 convertible.

BTW, if either of you want winter wheels I have a set of OEM E46 18" M3 wheels I'd be happy to part with. Not perfect, but fine for snow tire duty.

I can dig them out and snap some pictures if you like. I know that they have some rash on them, but it's been a year or so since I've looked at them and I can't remember how bad it was.

EDIT: I don't have tires on them, just the rims--I swapped the winter tires onto the "Sport Edition" rims I run on the E90.

Nineteens would be suicidal around the NY metro area, even eigthteens are a crap shoot.

Having said that, the ZHP rides well on either, but even better on my set of seventeen snows.

My Z4 was abysmal on eighteens in anything under say, fifty degree temps - bone crushing and spine compressing is a good way to describe it - deafening too if you hit a pothole, I'm serious, a huge slam, like a gun going off , I was once convince I'd broken something.

Did all of you forget the horror stories of getting into dove gray interior M3 when it's wet outside, wearing a black belt, and causing permanent damage to the seats?

Dove gray was a lot lighter than the gray offered on E46. I had dove gray in my '93 325i. What a nightmare it was to keep clean! After five years of ownership I swore off light colored interiors. Unfortunately, some manufacturers only offer tan or gray. In that case, gray wins.

I had a very icky gray in a 94 Accord V6. The E46 gray is head and shoulders above that. We also have gray in our 5, and it looks great. It does show dirt more easily than black, but short of the browns, I don't know what doesn't. Even Imola can get really gross over time.

I have to say, though, I love the saddle brown in my X5. Wonderful color. Not too light and not too dark. But talk to me in three more years.

I had tan in my E46. Loved it. Just had to be careful with the floor mats since they'd stain pretty easy (mud, dirt, etc).

I had grey in my E39. Hated it. Sure it didn't show the dirt as much as the tan in my E46, but I hated sitting in it -- very dreary place to sit for the ~40k miles I put on that car.

My wife's E92 has the saddle brown and black combo. I like it more than the grey, but less than the tan (mostly because the dash is all black -- and it gets really dusty, so never looks clean).

My CTS has a tan interior. I love it. But the floor mats are annoyingly stained. Oh well -- at least I don't look at the floor mats when driving...

Just a heads up for you, the galves which is the book the NY State dealers use to determine the trade in value here in NY on this car is $24,500 with 42k miles. There is an add-on for the low miles of $3,400 which you never really get (it might add $1000 to $1500 in the real world) but even with the higher number it goes to $27,900.

I would pay up to $3,000 over book for a car if it turns out to be a major beauty in person.

Hope this info helps you out.

I know he wasn't a big fan of the e90 330i, but it is a little interesting to go back to an e46M. My guess is he would miss the e90 for daily stuff whereas the M is more fun/interesting to drive, so it might work. A non-M e46 would not work at this point.

It's my understanding in the M3 coupe it sounds great from the inside, with no discernible forks in the blender (unlike the outside experience).

With the roof folded away, do you get a sonic hybrid of the two?

The drive was what convinced us. It was perfect.

I am glad to be back in an M and Tonya is glad to be back in a convertible.

We do not have the car. We need to work through all of the paperwork. The seller has a lien and I want to take out a small note, so the logistics might get interesting. But we've agreed on terms.

I hope to take possession by later in the week.

Good timing. The end of the week looks gorgeous! And isn't nice when the entire executive committee is happy?

And we got movement on price.

Excellent! Does it still have any manufacturer warranty left?

I haven't actually bought it yet, just agreed to terms with the intent to buy it. But it's not in my possession and I haven't paid for it. So it's not mine yet.

Maybe by the end of the week you can include me on the list.

Nice. Well done.
What's funny is how I feel about it. It's a great copy of a great car. But it's really familiar in a lot of ways. So there's no weird giddiness. I'm just looking forward to having a nice, fun-to-drive convertible again.

Hey, brother! Congrats. What fun. And you owed Tonya a convertible...
Between the dogs and the 'verts, this is getting weird.

Wow, congrats (in advance)!

FWIW, I love the S54 and as much as I love the 987S's, I think bmw's engines are better. I never understood why people bitched about it sound either, I happened to like it every time I drove it. Very excited for you...

I should be sated with the audi & cayman, but I run an autotrader search weekly for 1er's, e46M's and e92M's.

Your "Single White Female" side is showing a little.

Edit: It'll actually be nice to have someone to compare maintenance notes with.

I know that the MZ4 used a slightly modified exhaust so it had a different sound, but I absolutely loved the sound that it made and I miss mine dearly. I'll admit that I go to youtube and watch videos like these every once in a while to relive it.

OT.... but I love this Top Gear comparo with the Boxster S vs. MZ4. Basically, the Porsche has more "precision that flattens your ego" while the BMW "begs to be driven like a beast". I can certainly say that turning off the traction and getting on it hard will certainly scare the shit out of you if you are not ready for a wild ride. :yikes:

That sounds a lot different (and a lot better) than what I've heard many E46 M3s sound like. :dunno:

I think it sounds very similar... except it is missing the marbles in the exhaust.

There could be quite a few quotes from the old roadfly and bimmerfest days dragged out and tossed around.

I'm sure at some point in time he has made a comment about the E46 M3 in convertible form that was not positive. I'd even bet money on it.

Oh well... it's a nice car. It's about time he came to his senses.

Probably, but eh, we all change our minds - I hated convertibles for years, till I got one ;)

Sounds great....

Glad it seems to have worked out (so far) for you -

Patty and I drove a convertible the other day.
SLK320.
Never thought I'd like it.
I did.

Ummm.....
I think another convertible is in the works for us too.
I have her looking at E46 as well as CLK's also.

Congrats though. NICE car.
