...as a future V70R replacement.

I'd prefer a black interior and M-pkg, but the odds are astronomically low.

Didn't you hate their handling?

As my daily driver, yes. As a family car, nah, it's all right. Beats just about any SUV.

It's just a (desperate) remote option, anyway.

One option we have, if we get the M3 or another substitute, is to ditch our 2006 e60 (which has only 27k miles and all the bells and whistles). Now my spouse loves it, so it might not go. But if it does, it will be a great deal. After 4 years, all the bugs are through the snake and it's a zippy family hauler. It is an automatic, though. But frankly, I see no joy in driving a stick shift AWD BMW.

In the meantime we'll try to live with 3 (really 4, with my father's e46 wagon) cars with garage parking for only 2...

 Having owned a 330xi, I disagree, but to each her own.

Well, you're in a better position to say about a sedan. I can't imagine any fun in driving our AWD wagon with a stick, but everyone--as you say--is different. :)

I agree that bmw's awd and the suspension that it comes with adds a lot of understeer, reduced suspension travel and puts a damper on fun in general. But the stick makes it tolerable and easier to balance out of turns...
