View Full Version : Thinking about a new Mini Cooper S convertible now...

:)
That would be fun! I've yet to drive the current gen MINI. I liked the first gen Cooper S.
And I've been looking into a used MCS hardtop to use as a commuter.
An MCS convertible somehow isn't my style. But I can see how someone might find it appealing.
Go for it.

Funny.
I know what you mean. The MCS convertible reminds me a bit of a VW convertible...But, it fits the bill on paper. Gotta go test drive one.
I've been nothing but thrilled with my MCS as a commuter car. It's perfect, especially for Manhattan.
I loved my E46, and it was overall a "better" car. But the MCS is way more perfectly suited to this hardcore daily duty for which I purchased it.
I would not buy an R53, though. R56 only. Chrysler engine FTL, BMW\Peugeot engine FTW.

The MCS hard tops seem like they could be a fun little car. I'm not quite sold on the convertible personally but for you? Definitely check them out. The MCS 'verts have gotten very good reviews for being a fun, sporty 4-door convertible.
Remind me, what year did the generations change?
I think 2007 was the first year of the R56. (hardtop... another year or two for the 'vert to catch up)

There's a two seat "roadster" version of the Mini planned for production, it made the shows this winter - looks nifty.
Not sure when it's available.
If the four-seater is what you want and you're willing to spend in the 20's, I'd strongly suggest an e46 vert, ZHP or not, it's the perfect car for what you want. :)

I've been looking at MINIs too. The local dealer has a few leftover 2009 models left, with 4-6k off the sticker price. I've test driven several of them over this past weekend, and was very impressed. I'm trying to decide between a Cooper S and a Clubman still on the lot. I like the power and handling of the Cooper S, but the extra space of the Clubman would be handy at times.

That's a deal! But, from what I understand, the convertible's poor rear visibility is horrendous in the models prior to the pop-up roll bars...

I'd strongly suggest the R56/R55/R57 (coupe, clubman, and convertible ;)) over the first-gen cars. The first years for the bodystyles are 2007, 2008, and 2009 respectively.
The R57 (new conv) is head and shoulders above a 1st gen convertible ('05-'08), both in terms of power delivery and overall refinement. Handling, road noise, visibility are all MUCH better on the 2nd gen.

Horrendous is an understatement. On the first-gen, I don't even know why they bothered putting in a rear window. You can not see out of the back with the top up.
I can't believe how red this car's interior is. Wow!

My only concern re: the MCS cab is that it gets heavier, pricier, slower, and the back seat (IIRC) gets even tighter.
But aside fromt the performance hit, if there is room enough for the kids in the back and the price is ok, it's a very cool car to cruise about.

That's actually a beautiful color combo, Sparkling Silver with Redwood Lounge. It is not as deep "red" as you see in that pic, you should certainly see one "in person" to get an idea. It has a bit of orange/copper tint to it-- not red like BMW's Coral Red or Tanin Red used to be.

structural rigidity and power AUC are a quantum leap in the R57 compared with the first MINI convertible effort.
A left field idea is the new 300 hp V6 Mustang...
TD, I don't think we're planning to sell our Mini yet, but we may in the not too distant future.

Out of left field--but appropriate for this forum: Just drove a 2006 e46 M3 convertible with SMG. Really, really good, despite the SMG. The transmission is a weird thing, but the car is amazing. Like my old 330i on steriods.
And yet, I may just not be a used-car buying person. The car had a number of very odd electrical gremlins--high beams stuck on; passenger door would not unlock via the interior release button. But the deal breaker? No heated seats. In this area, that feature really extends the driving season. But also, I'm now used to I-drive and a heated steering wheel. How do you go backwards in amenities? Driving that car just made me wish I could order it new with all the bells and whistles.
Totally spoiled.
I don't dare drive an e90 M3 convertible, if I still imagine an MCS convertible might fill the bill.
I think we just have to figure out whether we're buying a third car toy, or replacing the 5 wagon with something that needs to function as a year-round satisfying car with some creature comforts. If the latter, probably the best bet is an e90 335 convertible; if the former--a new MCS or a used e46 convertible.
There's quite a nice Audi S4 convertible at Advantage. But from what I can tell, it offers no "advantage" over the 3 convertible.

You can find an e46 vert with nav (but no I-drive of course), in fact, BMW of Ridgefield CT has an 06 ZHP vert with 35 plus k miles, a six speed and a cpo tag, all for 32k (steep, but there's room to negotiate). It's stunningly well preserved.
No heated steering wheels, but certainly heated seats are pretty common (I've got 'em, love 'em). Mine's also bluetooth equipped - though I've never used it, I'm not particularly interested in gadgets for the car.
Audi convertibles are certainly beautiful, and an S4 would be equivalent to the M3 in the market place, but it's heavier and the AWD platform isn't really necessary - RWD E46's are just so much fun to drive.
As much as I like to think about new cars and what's next, my vert has been such a great car (still tight and rattle free and still as beautiful inside and out as the day I took it home), I'd hate to part with it :)
Yeah, I'm a fanboi, I guess :-0
There's an Imola red ZHP 330Cic auto at Arlington. 24k, 52k miles.

Still a convertible.
Next.

I've never driven either in convertible form... I'd probably take a MCS vert over an M3 vert.

Problem solved!
Even though the idea of ANOTHER e46 bores the life out of me, I can't really get the M3 drive out of my head. Always a dangerous thing...financially. It's the same $$ as a brand new MCS droptop. VOB has one that's a bit pricer--a stick that's under warranty until 2013, which might be very nice.

I guess I've taken the first step into the MINI club. I've left a deposit on a leftover 2009 Cooper S. It's "Sparkling Silver" with a black roof and black Punch leather interior. It has the Premium Package, xenon headlights, and Bluetooth. It also has an automatic transmission with paddle shifters, which doesn't thrill me, but I can live with it. But at least it's new, with 112 miles on it, and the price was over 5 grand off the sticker price. I'm going to have heated seats added after taking delivery, which will hopefully be tomorrow depending on my schedule.
It sure handled really well. It was the first time I'd driven a MINI, and the thing drove like a little go-kart. Hopefully it will be a fun little car.

Congrats! They're definitely fun little cars. The fun-ness hasn't worn off for me in two years.
Though, I must admit, I think I'd prefer root canal to having an auto tranny in mine... it just seems unimaginable to me. :dunno:

Congrats! Post some pics after you take delivery. Are you keeping the E46?
BTW, Knoxville is finally getting a MINI dealership. It is currently under construction. Century MINI in Greenville, SC or MINI of Nashville were the closet MIMI dealers therefore it has been many years since I have driven one. I seriously considered selling my '01 330Ci for one in 2004. Thanks! I'd much rather have a manual, but the price on this one was hard to pass up. It also doesn't help that my wife has a neurological disease which makes it difficult to coordinate muscles to drive a manual. It's a shame, because she was actually quite good at it a few years ago when I first taught her (before she got sick). Since the MINI will be my only car for now, having it with an automatic is probably the best way to go. She'll be able to drive it if she needs to.
Maybe in the near future I can add another car to the fleet which would be a manual.

I'll just have the MINI as my only car for now. I sold the E46 not that long ago, and have been driving a Land Rover LR3 as of late. I need to make a note to update my car in the profile once I get it.
Congrats on getting the MINI dealer. The one here in Birmingham just opened up last year. They seem to be doing a great business, and now it's not necessary to go to Atlanta or Nashville to buy or service a MINI.
I'll definitely post some pictures when I get it. I'm hoping to get by there and finish the deal tomorrow, so that way I can go on the local BMW CCA drive that's being held on Saturday. It is a trip to the Jack Daniel's distillery, and there are plenty of fun roads that I'd like to try the MINI out on.

FWIW, it has a strut bar brace, which either means it is a late build '02 (after March of 2002, IIRC) or that he added it afterward. Not that this is in anyway important; just a piece of trivia that popped into my head.

Obviously each car is different, but the former GF has an '02 vert. It had several issues. She purchased it with nearly 30k and by the time our relationship ended she had 50k+.
My gripes with it were the SMG :ack: and the cowl shake.

That's okay. She just never drives my car. No way in hell it's going to affect my car choices for me.
This in stark contrast to a buddy of mine who's wife can drive manual, but has succeeded, after years of continuous nagging, in forcing him to always sit down to pee at home.

The counterpoint might be that a man more interested in your driving abilities than anything else is probably not a good man to marry. :)

Call.
Call.
No point until I can get Tonya to check out the ad and agree that we should go check out the car.
Fortunately we have a kid-free window Saturday morning to go check it out.
after years of continuous nagging, in forcing him to always sit down to pee at home.

Just called. For what it's worth, sounds like an honest, wealthy Indian guy who loves the car. Says it has some dings and other cosmetic imperfections. But solid on maintenance.
We're checking it out Sat AM.

I got the story. He got rear-ended. Not too bad but slightly bent the trunk lid and required the rear bumper be replaced. And he hit something while driving that messed up the front bumper.
He had the work done at Wagonworks so I trust it was done right.
Of course, if I really like the car, I'll take it for a PPI.

If it was Wagonworks, it should be fine.
We're checking this one out: http://www.rosenthaljaguar.com/detail.cfm?requestAction=goDetail&inventoryID=170500&NewUsed=0&specialFlag=0&sortBy=5&displayNum=35&currPage=1&currSection=1&startPage=1&displayPage=7&showAll=0&orderBy=0&advancedSearch=0&minMPG=&listType=C&Year=&MakeID=4&ModelID=&Trim=&itemType=0&txtItemType=&txtMinPrice=&txtMaxPrice=&sortOrderBy=5%2C0
About $10k cheaper than the one I tried at Tischer, and it has heated seats. Just a few weeks left under warranty, tho.

Nice. Tonya was just ogling the leather. The cinnamon i nice. White with cinnamon is out first choice. But the black and red is pretty cool. Much better than silver with black.

Both combo's are very nice. Not sure I would ever get a silver BMW though. The E46 body calls for a stand out color to show its lines.
+1 on the cinnamon. We loved it in our coupe.

Interestingly, the kbb and edmunds prices for this car are about $4k less than his asking price. I wonder how willingly he'll come down.

Darker colors are much better on the convertible. But this one has the options I like, price, mileage. So I can live with it. It will also weather living outside a bit better than a dark car.
There is a nice jet black with gray at VOB. Looks much sharper than I'd imagine. Buy I know from experience grey doesn't age all that well.

I forget the name of this gray exterior. It might be the same has TD's old 330i. Was there something called Titanium Gray? The dark gray/lighter gray combo has a nice monoculture look about it. But gray is hard to keep.

I saw that one. But, honestly, a number of details about it make me leery. While moded largely with OE mods, you've got the super cheesy lower front grill and the lambo side mirrors. Those mods imply an "E46 Fanatics"-type as the previous owner which implies potentially poor maintenance and lots of abuse.
And I hate BMW grey interiors.
Otherwise, it's a damn sharp car.

Actually, anthracite is slightly different - more blue in the mix. The E39 is anthracite.
My dad already had the E39 when I had that E46 and they've been parked side by side. The color is more different than the pics suggest.

I'll be honest, the combo kind of looks like something that they wouldn't allow to be ordered together. In general, none of the brown leathers were ever orderable with silver, IIRC.

I called 2 dealers and 2 independent shops.
The first dealer was $1600, the second started at $2800 and came down to $2400 when I told them how outrageous their price was.
One of the independents never called me back, and the other was around $1200.
How do you like the SMG?
I really like SMG, except for sometimes when it drives me crazy.
Really the only complaint I have is when navigating stop signs, or speed bumps, or trying to turn right on red. Basically anytime you slow to a crawl or don't come to a complete stop for over 2 seconds. The auto downshift thing kicks in and it feels like it takes forever for it to drop into 1st gear.
So my advice is to test drive it in traffic and some neighborhoods.

Good advice, again, as what you describe is pretty much most of my driving. You're talking about auto mode?

Tom, I might have one. I will check tonight.
I definitely have one from either '02 or '03.
Good advice, again, as what you describe is pretty much most of my driving. You're talking about auto mode?
No, even in manual mode it will downshift to avoid lugging the engine, or it will go to 1st after you come to a complete stop.
It will catch you out sometimes in that split second between when it realizes you've stopped and initiates the gear change and when you decide it's time to go.
I would never ever use auto mode - it is pretty much awful.
When you do drive it, another tip that you may have seen, is to either keep your throttle position absolutely still, or slightly lift when you select a gear change. With experience you will get the timing right and be able to shift perfectly smoothly.

I almost got a sweet Imola Red M3 Conv back in 2006 when I got the MZ4. BMW had some amazing leases on the car, but they were not as crazy as the one I picked up on the MZ4. I loved the MZ4, but always had a sweet spot for the E46 M3 and sometimes wish that I had gotten that car.

Guys, don't go strictly by what the brochure lists as an allowable combination. With few exceptions, we could order just about any exterior color with any interior color... even if it was not one of the ones listed as an "official" combination in the brochure or website.

Drove the black and red one. Probably okay mechanically but beat to shit cosmetically. I mean, I understand that any 8 year old car is going to have wear. But this was bad. Our 11 year old E39 looks much MUCH nicer. Oh, and while going straight, the steering wheel was not centered. And the same shop that did the alignment resulting in the skewed steering wheel replaced the clutch.
Um, I think I'll pass.

I seem to remember some kind of recall being done on my M3 and after the service was performed my steering wheel ended up not centered. I immediately noticed and let them know and they fixed it quickly. I think this was a common result.
Can't remember which recall it was though.

Between Tonya and I, we have such limiting color preferences that, even ignoring price, there aren't that many examples out there. No silver or red exteriors. No grey, black or tan interiors (that's the biggest problem - I'll do black but she won't and she'll do tan but I won't). And I want it to have NAV. And it's got to have heated seats.
So this will likely be an ongoing project.
No black, grey or tan? What does that leave you with, just cinnamon and red?

LOL. Thanks everyone. I'm very excited. And best of all, I have the all important spouse buy-in. The SMG just didn't put the smile on either of our faces. This one did. And the appeal to practicality is good too--regular warranty for another year; CPO warranty until 2013. Plus the indefinable feeling that this one seemed really well cared for. At least, not abused or neglected.
This car was meant to have a stick. Of course, talk to me again when I'm driving it on a rainy day into town in heavy, rush hour traffic. But hey, I did that for 30-plus years without giving it a second thought.

I guess I should post the obligatory pictures. I sealed the deal yesterday, but brought the car back this morning for full detail. So far, the car handles wonderfully. I'm certainly not driving it aggressively with only 200 miles on the clock now, but it's obvious that the car is going to be a little screamer.
There are a couple of little additions that I 'm planning on doing in the near future. I want to add the center armrest, and have heaters added to the seats. Besides that, it should be good to go.

I have the same color interior as yours, but since mine's a ZHP, it's got the black cube instead of the aluminum trim - however, same seats, shifter, and the rest of the bits and pieces.
Awesome car, you made the right choice!!! I'm kinda jealous

I saw it online, but not in person. Looks great and meets all your criteria. Bet you could get them down a bit. Sell the 5. They do a nice job of reconditioning. My car came with brand new oem tires. Plus free maintenance and warranty adds up to a value. Ask for Nan if you go.

Indeed it is. Yet again. I guess three times' the charm. Oy! But it's a great car; I can't stop driving it. Of course it helps that it's 75 and sunny today. It's pretty amazing to have among the very last of the e46 M3s--and of the six cylinder M3s (if you don't count the roadster). This was a 7/06 build.
Thanks for all the good wishes, all. Now I just wish I had a three-car garage...or at least my own driveway. Time to find a landscaping solution to our four-car, shared driveway (six cars, if you count the neighbors) problem.

Thanks everyone! I've done a little puttering around in the car this weekend, and am absolutely amazed at how well it handles. The steering just feels fantastic, with just the right amount of feel and feedback. The brakes have been spot-on, and very confidence-inspiring. Although I've been fairly gentle since the car is so new, I can only imagine what it will be like when it has a few more miles and is properly broken-in.
I've really been surprised at how solid the interior is for the car's price. The materials feel good, and everything works very precisely. It would be neat if the toggle switches were actually metal instead of plastic, but that's just my inner pilot talking who's used to metal toggles in airplanes. :)
And yes, that's a Valentine One plugged into the power socket on the dash. I've already been zapped a few times since yesterday. I guess around these parts a MINI zipping around may attract attention.

Already do. I'm more excited about this car than any other car I've gotten since I was in my 20s. (I might have been just as excited abobut my Accord Hatchback--but that was then.)

Hmm, that's a good idea! I'll have to poke around and see if I can find such critters. There are a few accessories I'm adding to my list to get, including the armrest (with its extra storage), as well as the nylon storage boxes that mount under the hatch cover.
Speaking of third party mods, does anyone know if there is an equivalent provider of decently priced MINI accessories, like Tischer or Pacific BMW does for BMWs? I had a few spare minutes last night and went around Googling, but couldn't decide on which companies were legitimate and which weren't. Maybe some more free time will pop up soon and I can do some calling around.

Yours is even newer than mine - mine came off the line 3/06.
The attention to detail with these things is really nice, doors slam with a solid thunk, interiors are nicely put together, paint is smooth and clear - the premium charged for convertibles seems justified.
My car shares the hood and front fenders with the coupe, but yours has no body panels in common - I think you and I share a rear trunk lid and windshield though :)
They're great cars built to a high standard - the M3 option is just icing on the cake.

Thanks for the link! I could live with something "slightly more than discount". hahaha!! The local MINI dealer is still fairly new, and I've yet to see anyone working the parts area. In fact, it's pretty much empty besides some license plates hanging on a back wall. I have also yet to see any service advisors around, so hopefully there's an active service department when the time comes. :)

I still have to sell myself on the (prudent) feasibility of the idea. Strangely, I'm not getting "are you nuts?" from my spouse.
Then again, I'm proposing this as a buy and hold indefinitely car and if we were to do that, it would make a lot more sense to do it with a car like this than a cheap, beat-to-shit older copy.
The problem is that I'd probably never get to drive it. I'd end up with the wagon.

I really like having the wagon. The AWD, the roof rails for our bike rack, and the relatively decent gas mileage really make it a keeper for its role.

I just tried a search on bmwusa.com and there is not a single CPO '06 M3C 6-spd w/NAV for sale anywhere in the country, regardless of color.
And per the CarFax, that one had been there since January.
Why does shit always sell the second I get interested in it? I was almost to the point of fully rationalizing buying it. I was moving funds around in my head.
The problem now is, with the weather getting nicer, there won't be any deals to be had at least until fall.

True. But if you let that stop you, you'll miss a whole season of top-down motoring...and since '06 was the last year of the E46 M3 (wasn't it?), you'll miss that car entirely and have to settle for an E90 335Ci.

I think I'd be scared to own one of the hardtop 3 convertibles. Lease, yes. Try to own for the duration? Probably not. Plus that trunk holds nothing! The M3 has decent space for a drop top.

I'm still looking. There is a private party example for sale in Herndon that incidentally is black/cinnamon/6-spd/NAV with slightly lower miles and asking $33k.I've emailed the seller and plan to check it out. My only concern is that they installed a blacked-out grill and side vents and the pictures are crappy enough that I wonder if they're hiding anything else.
But if I could get it for $30k, it might be worth foregoing the relatively useless CPO warranty.

Btw, I had nav in my 05 Z4 and while I liked it, it wasn't nearly the nav system that's in our Infiniti - I wouldn't make factory nav a prerequisite on this car, just throw in a Garmin or if you're really fixed on it, get a good enough deal where retrofitting a factory head unit makes sense (all the wiring's there).
Yeah, I had the dvd nav on one of my e46's... Wondering why you're even bothering. Only useful as a display for the icelink.
I really only want it to improve the look of the dash. And since we're talking used, where nav is more or less free, I figure why not hold out for it.
Does Nav make XM integration more difficult? I can't remember whether the XM Commander works with nav or not.
I had one E46 with nav and several without it, and I actually kind of preferred the non-nav dash.

I think there was something about Sirius vs Nav. At any rate, I agree with you. I think the Nav makes the dash look more dated. BTW, a twilight zone thing--the buttons on the radio/hvac console are moved around vs my 2003/2002/2001 e46s. Very strange.

Yeah, I recall that they did that at least once (if not twice)... moving the buttons into a different position just because they could. I guess the guy in charge of that part of the dash had to change something that year in order to keep his job.

Me, too. Although it will probably just piss me off. Still, I think I got a decent deal for retail. Hmm. I'm gonna guess $26 to $28k at auction?

I don't have it anymore. My old login and password for Galves and Manheim was finally disabled a few months ago. :irate:

There's a guy I went to high school with (MANY years ago) who I'm connected to on LinkedIn and Facebook and who lists his current job as "General Sales Manager at Manheim Auto Auctions, Pennsylvania".
I'm pondering reaching out to him to see about getting a car at auction. I know I can't directly attend but I'm curious what could be worked out, making it worth the effort on his part as well as mine.

Yeah, I'd think retail for a given example (options/condition/etc) minus ~$8k.

A very good friend of mine used to own a wholesale auto business from ~94-99. His focus was mostly on Volvos -- he found an arbitrage opportunity where he could buy used Volvos in the NYC area, and sell them in AZ, CA and WA for $500-$1000 more after transportation cost, and he built up a customer base of used and new dealerships. But he closed up shop when the arbitrage margin dropped after a couple years. But fora while he was doing this on 20-30 cars per month and did quite well for himself.
He also would hit the auctions at least once a month and would usually buy 1-2 cars if he could get the right price at auction. But he had a wholesale dealers license.
He offered to help me out on getting a car at auction once and he looked around for a couple things I was interested in. It didn't work out, but what he would have done is bought the car at auction wholesale and then had one of his retail dealer customers sell the car to me, essentially at cost plus a small fee for their bother (likely would have been $250 or so)...
Your Mannheim friend may be able to help coordinate something like that...

When I was growing up, my dad would buy his cars from the local used car dealer. Over the years, they became pretty friendly and the owner of the dealership would just ask my dad what he wanted and go and get it for him at auction.
