OK, so you guys might remember that I am waiting for my 14" tires to wear out before replacing the wheels with new BBS' and good performance tires on my BMW E30.

I came out today to find that one of the tire has a nail in it.
There's a Firestone very close to where I live, so I figure I would just have them patch the tire until they are worn out.

The liar came out, touched the tire needing a patch, then declared that the tire is too old and that I would have to buy a new tire.

Never mind that if he had bothered (or even know) to read the manufacture date stamped right on the tire in four digit format he would know that these ES100's are not very old at all.

And then, I guess he's never worked on tires with soft compounds, he proceeded to tell me that my tires have "cracks" when they are simply some scarring from um, enthusiastic driving.

Seriously, bold face lying to me so you can make some money on one stinking tire is worth it to you?

Really?

what else did you expect to happen?

why would anyone go to a tire sales shop to have a tire repaired?

tire repairs are done at corner gas station mechanics.

Firestone is not in the business for repairs, just for sales.

Do you go to Sears to have your washing machine fixed? No, they will want to sell you a new washing machine.

I'll skip my local experience, becuase that's a broken record, but it seems like every time I've gone to San Diego over the past 8 years, it's included a trip to a big chain tire store to get a tire fixed on one of my parents' cars. We've been to three or four of them (two Big O's and one or two Discount Tires).

In one case, my dad thought it was bad enough to get the tire replaced and the guy said they could fix it no problem. They'd sell him a tire if it would make him feel better, but a repair would be fine. I think he was charged one time ($8 or so).

Here too.

But my Audi indie guy found me a place and it's getting fixed now as we speak.

:+1

I've been to American Tire Warehouse and Discount Tires to get flats repaired and nails pulled and patched and they've never done the hard sell act, even when the tires I was getting fixed were not purchased/mounted by them. The good thing about the ATW place near me is that if it turned out the tire really needed to be replaced rather than repaired, and it was my decision on what to do, they have (or had) the same tires in stock, at comparable prices, so that I could get it all done quickly, no muss, no fuss.

I have never been to one of the manufacturer brand name tire stores, like a Firestone, but I can imagine getting the hard sell at one of those places.

I've been VERY pleased with all the Discount Tire places I've gone to up in the NW.

About every 2-3 months I bring the Jeep in for them to rebalance the tires and, most of the time, dismount them enough to clean out the tire bed (I get LOTS of wood chunks and mud stuffed in there). And I've been doing this for about 5+ years now since I had the tires originally installed. Their prices are very competitive but even if I was paying $20-30+ more per tire its LONG since been recouped.

And never one single word of complaint.

Not one protects of work due to my wheel spacers (which some shops don't want to touch).

And never any attempt at up selling.

The guys just do their work. For the last 7-8 years I've been using them with all my cars and now my wife's car and if they keep this up I can't really imagine switching to a different tire chain.
