JST inspired me with his recent purchase. :) I will have one someday and while it will not be new, it will be new to me.

I know! Too bad money does not grow on trees! Maybe in 4-6 years I will be able to afford a 2010 C2S?

Used 911 prices are not that bad, which has had me thinking more than once about how it would be a great alternative to a new (insert: 135i, 335i, etc.) for my next car.

But there's the baggage that comes with it that will likely keep me away for a bit longer... mostly not wanting to "show off" with a Porsche right out of grad school... assuming that I would be able to afford it, of course.

Used 911 prices are not terrible, but the thing I keep coming back to is this: even used, a base 911 is 15-20K more than an equivalent Boxster S (this narrows somewhat the older you go, of course), and the Boxster is the better car to drive. At least when you are comparing 987s to 997s--the 997 is a nice enough car, certainly nothing to complain about, but it isn't as telepathic and rewarding as the Boxster is. And, while the 986/996 comparison used to favor the 911 in the low-end torque department, these days the Boxster S delivers enough power to negate any advantage the 911 has there, at least in real-world driving.

The only thing the 911 has going for it are the two squib seats in the back, which aren't even really big enough for a three year old. Is that worth 15 or 20K?

Hmm... I really don't pay much attention to these P-car threads... But I vaguely recall that you were the ones in the camp that 911 >> Boxster.

Something about torque = good, and that although the boxster is theoretically more balanced, the 911 just kicks ass.

Do I need to do a search for this? :D

No--I changed my mind. Mostly what did it was realizing I couldn't get my kid in the back of a 911 in any way that she would have been happy with. If the extra seats don't let me carry the kid, what good are they?

Nothing wrong with changing one's mind.

In a way, Porsche has been a victim of its own success wrt the 911, they tried to bury it back in the late 70's with the introduction of the 924 and 928, the future for the company was clearly to move into a front-engined (watercooled at that) rwd chassis.

The Porsche faithful went nuts and the (even then) antiquated 911 chassis was given a stay of execution.

The mid-engine layout was a brilliant move on the company's part, it keeps the Porsche vibe going (kinda like the old Spyder from the 50's) in terms of styling and gives the car great balance and handling. Plus good stowage.

I personally think Boxsters are homely cars, but I'd still get one if the timing and the price were right.

Cool.

I still want a Cayman. I just wish there weren't such a price premium for the hard top.

When I was looking, the Cayman premium did not exist in the used car marketplace.

I don't have a current subsciption, but I actually think there was a difference between caymans & boxsters in galves/auction numbers. Not a lot, perhaps 2k or something.
