View Full Version : 2011 E90/E92 Competition Pkg Info

Not badly priced, really. Unique 19" wheels, adaptive dampeners with a special setting and lowered suspension.
It's about the price of the first two options a la carte.
I'm still not sure all that sportiness (harsh ride) is something to covet in shitty NE roads, but I don't like the 18" wheels and the ADS could help over crappy sections(?). Then there is the introduction of more expensive stuff to break.
Typical options that a normal person would want on the M3 add up to around $5k.
So we're looking at $68k for a comp pkg M3 coupe.
At that price, I'm getting a 911. What's the point?

i think the "delete bourgeois pig weight" is a $200,000 option on the M3.

I would never consider an M3 coupe. I'd always go 911 over M3.
But you can do ED and negotiate 6k+ off an M3 easy. If not 8K.
The way I configured "my" E90 M3, since I already wanted 19" wheels, this car would be at or under $60K out the door.:dunno:
But I just read that those nice 19" GTS wheels may not be forged which would be very dumb.

i'd get neither, but i see your point.

And if you ever were allowed a test drive in one, you'd immediately realize how much better of a drive your current 987S is.

I have ZERO doubt. In fact I've been looking for an M3 sedan to see just how much of a fun hit it would be now that I'm comfortable with the 987S. If really bad, I may just try to squeeze a used 3er in addition to the 987S.
But the 987S can't fit a family of 4, so something must be done when the nanny is gone (because I will not drive a slushy everyday and watch the 987S gather dust in the garage).

Still no brembo's?!?!?

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. The M3 is less involving for the driver than a 987S, but I'm not sure it's less "fun" to drive in the ordinary course. It's just different. For one thing, it's massively faster than even a 3.4L 987, and the delta feels even greater behind the wheel than it probably is. The 987 can get up and boogie, but when you lay into the M3 it tries to annihilate you. That's kind of fun. And when it's gray and dreary and you have to keep the Boxster's top up, the M3 actually feels like the more open and airy car. Steering feel is nowhere near as good, but it isn't awful, especially around town, and I actually think the BMW's shifter feel is better.
Of course, get a 987S on a twisty road with the top down, and it stands head and shoulders above the M3. But get out on the freeway or into suburban boulevards and the M3 is the better drive.
Which is why you need both. :ack:
Oh, and as far as the competition package? Dumb. You don't want 19s. Too harsh. A higher limit for the DSC seems pointless; I'm either going to leave it on, in which case I'm on the street and the limits even in the non-technology package cars are fine, or I'm going to autocross it in which case I'm turning the thing off completely. The suspension upgrades might be the cat's meow, but there's nothing wrong with the box stock, non-adjustable suspension.
Save your money and put it toward a good set of 18" BBS wheels.

68k is a used 911. A used e9x m3 is 50's (or even high-40's, I've even seen 45k for a cpo 08 with 30k miles). Ah, but it wouldn't have the comp package. Back on topic, there is very little of interest in this package.

I will reiterate once again that I cannot understand the point of the E92 M3. Buy the sedan. Save some money. Get two free doors.

Yes, that's the other option. Leave the stock 18" for winter and get BBs 18" for the summer.
Also the lower 10mm is probably going to irritate me since I already was plenty worried with ZHP on ramps/driveways.
well, shyeah.

There is a LeMans Blue E90M3 in Nashua (with DCT unfortunately), that I want to go see. I'd like for us to see that blue on that car so I don't have to talk about that paint color for 1-2 years. Also, to refreshen my memory and recalibrate the experience now that I have a new benchmark.
We still don't know re: the nanny situation past this Fall. Either the 987S has to go this Fall or it stays another year. I'm ok with selling it because it seems to be holding up in value well and I think the M3 is a better fit all around at this point in my life - plus I am secretly (?) drooling of an even cooler ED trip than the last. No matter what the Boxster will get tons of use this year and I've already had a great time with it.
I will say that you get used to the 18s after a while--and on a black car they have a certain Mad Max-esque mien. Oh, and you basically never have to wash them, which is nice.
Not all of us have kids. For me e92 > e90 (I've had two e90's already).

If I was to purchase a E92 M3 I would also go for the coupe. My 0.02, one four door in the family is enough.

Kids or not, I would personally nearly always choose more utility over less, assuming equal performance. I've probably said this before, but I hold coupes to a higher performance standard than sedans; if a car is going to inconvenience me utility-wise, it should outperform the utilitarian alternative. Compared to the e90 M3, the e92 m3 costs more, performs the same, and is less useful.
