The overwhelming feeling I get from this car, regardless of how I feel about the stylistic elements, is this:
For a 80K coupe, it's NOT special. It lacks that intangible je ne sais quois, that presence, that keanu reeves 'whoa'.
I don't think I'll ever want to own one.

What makes you think it's going to cost $80K?
BMW will price this vehicle somewhere North of a 545i (~$65K) and 745i (~$72K). Most likely it'll fall between those two numbers, closer to the 545i. Now, if you tack on options, you can probably get to $80K after taxes and drive off.
I dunno. It DOES have that special, so called "intangible jenesais quois" for me. The car looks sharp and reminds me of an Aston Martin, or the late 80's 8 series.

I can't imagine paying that much for a car. Especially considering that the e46 M3 will outperform it. I might be tempted to pay that much for a new P-car, but that's about it.
That said, I really like the look of the new 6er. Maybe an M6 for me?

Well, it's just one man's opinion FWIW.
I am glad others like HACK like the 6. It will help keep BMW afloat.
A 911 is special because of its heritage and performance. I don't see a lot of heritage in the 'new 6'. I am sure it'll perform pretty well though.
I dunno, it just didn't give me that 'gasp' feeling of the now defunct Jag F-type. Or the sumptuousness of the Maserati. Intangibles...

Are you certain? It's going to have a ~325hp engine mated to a ~3,500lbs frame.
That's only marginally off in terms of power to weight ration. And the 6er will be significantly larger than the E46 M3, with a lot more torque. Yeah, the E46 M3 will be quicker to 60, but only by a very slim margin...Probably less than half a second. :dunno:
Obviously BMW will not mate a diff. aggressively enough to make the new 6er outperform one of the ///M cars, but still, that's a heck of a machine if you ask me. It'll be a comfortable cruiser on the freeway and eat up asphalt like crazy, or it'll carve up canyon roads like a Thanksgiving Turkey, and you'll be able to take the car to the track like you're driving on your livingroom couch and yet shoot off lap times not too far off of some of the best performance vehicles in the world.
I think, compared to some of the upper echelon super coupes that this will compete against, it's a bargain. People will be cross-shopping this against Porkchop Carreras and the new Maserati coupe.

Of course I'm not certain of it's performance characteristics. I guess at this point in my life I am more interested in quickness than comfortable rapid highway cruising. The 6er is too heavy to be nimble (especially compared to what I drive now). However, I do understand that I am not the target audience.

Heavy? Yes. Too heavy? I dunno...
Even if it comes in at 3,600 lbs, it's still LIGHTER than some so-called sports cars, like the Audi S4, Nissan 350Z, Infiniti G35,...etc. And it'll have more HP and Torque than most of them too.

funny to realize how heavy those relative small cars are. it's true, the S4 v8 is a true pig. i kid about the M3 being one, but the S4 is truly a fat car.

Yeah, BMW seems to be the only car maker that consciously tries to make their cars lighter through subsequent generations.
Are you aware, that a 996 Turbo weighs in at 3,500 lbs? And the Carrera4s are near 3,700 lbs? They're not light cars anymore. The only light-ish cars Porkchop still makes are the GT-2s and GT-3s...Those come in at about 3,000lbs-3,100lbs.
I think even the Boxster weighed in excess of 3,200 lbs.
If you compare the 6er to cars that it's suppose to compete with (say, the 911 or even up to the Aston Martins), the 645Ci is actually quite attractive in terms of weight vs. HP.
I think the car is going to be a winner, and will draw following not unlike the original "Land Shark".

Hmmm...M6......mmmmm....
Now, I think THAT would be a special car.
Do you think it'll be priced way out of a sane range though?

Probably not much more than an M5. Definitely won't break the 6 figure plateau.
