Had a beautiful day autoXing. Stan showed with his yellow Elise, and we had a lot of fun. Five cars in SS, three Vettes and our two non-LSS Elises. One Vette ran around 40.6 secs, finishing 1st. Stan came in 2nd at 40.9, and I ran a 41.88 to plce 3rd. The other Vettes, I believe, never broke 44. So we came in 2 and 3 out of five, not bad considering the it was the longest course ever setup by Philly SCCA Solo II folks, and was considered to be a Vette course by all who attended. We learned a lot in the process, too.

-we both experienced significant oversteer, and inflating the back tires to 4 PSI over the fronts seemed to help a lot. I ran 27 - 31, Stan ran 28 - 32 front to back.

-Elises can very much compete with Vettes even in long courses. Stan and I were 1 and 2 for much of the competition, and only some last run heroics from the best Vette beat us.

-I learned that experience is good for at least one second on the course

-with LSS and slicks, the Elise should become more than formidable. We can't wait for next spring to try this out as I believe we both plan on converting our suspensions to full LSS.

Corvettes have never been known for looking like little cars...they never have been.

That white M3 looks familiar. Not sure, though...it isn't spinning and partially obscured by a cloud of tire smoke.

There has been no spinning in the last 3 events. Next event on Hoosiers for the first time....we'll see :paranoid:

That yellow was so much better looking than the boring maroon color. The pedal box is shifted way over towards the middle...that has to take some getting used to.

I didn't get to see either of them run, but the drivers didn't seem to be "seasoned" autocrossers anyway.

Oh, and Aty, how do you tell which option package they have? As far as I could tell they were identically optioned.

From the writeup bono quoted, it didn't sound like it either...

Oops. Missed that.

Okay, so it sounds like they didn't have the sport pkg.

And if that was the "longest" course the Philly region ever ran I know to stay away from most Philly events. FWIW, Eric and John D ran mid-high 37's in the DMG M3.

I think they both just have the touring pack (full leather seats and power windows + some minor extra bits).

The yellow one also has the stage 2 exhaust. (about 13 pounds lighter and a lot louder.)

Why would bonoboy care? It isn't like his Elise will see auto-x or the track...:speechle:

Although, I guess that he just wants to have the imgage

So, when will the first C6 spotting be at an autocross?

I was searching for pics of a C6 at an autox and found this. NOT a C6 But course workers beware!!

Not much chance I'm working without a pole nearby anytime soon.

Ah, I remember this clip. Take note of the sign visible in the first frame of the video. IIRC, this happened at an autocross event that took place as part of some Bowling Green-related festivities.

One other thing about Topeka...no poles or any other shelter. Never have I felt so safe working a course before (well the second day felt as safe as the first day). I had pretty easy positions to work both days and some other stations looked more exposed, but one thing that we just didn't see were cars going dangerously off course (there were brain dead moments like I had where I skipped a gate) and nothing where it looked like there was a potential of two cars heading for each other like we sometimes see at local events. The nature of the competition weeds out the total novices who are the usually the ones responsible for the worst problems. Still, though, I was struck by how stark the contrast was. If I put much more thought into it, I'd probably start calling on the region to adopt some kind of sign-off regimen that prevented those that are totally clueless from being allowed on course by themselves.

I don't know what happened to the guy in the video.

There were a couple of these people at the Philly event this weekend. They would get lost and then take off in the wrong direction after stopping for a moment to look around. Very bad!

Looks like 2 bodies go flying :( :dunno:

Uh... :speechle: That's horrible, and is why I consider not autox'ing any more. After my first 3 autox's, I was impressed with the perceived level of safety. But after 10 or so I'm getting more worried.

1) The cone workers are often completely inexperienced and clueless. Twice I've seen close calls with people trying to get a cone setup rather than letting it go to get out of the way of the next car.

2) The drivers are often inexperienced and clueless (myself included). I've seen several cars spin, and most of the time it was safe, but a few times there could have been a poll or a curb involved.

I've spun twice now (and that's not easy to do in an E46!). As I get closer and closer to the limit, I'm increasing my chance of making a critical mistake. :thumbdow: And the idea of watching someone plow down a cone worker, or even do it myself, is just horrible.

The only solution I've come up with is to bring things down a notch, and keep things furthur from the limits of losing control. But without the fun of pushing it to the edge, why am I waiting in line for 6 hours to get six 50 second runs?

Rant over.

Oh man, SIX runs! Sign me up :D And just two spins? That's it?

There are risks in everything we do...for some of us the rewards are worth it, for others........

But yeah, mowing someone over would be quite disturbing.

Probably moreso for the person being mowed.
