I have a gift certificate. I don't need soap, wax, polish, detailing spray, or microfiber cloths. Opinions - what's Y'all's Essential Detailing Thing that isn't one of those?

I was thinking of those finger detail mitts and the Mag wheel polish - yea or nay?

You will need to kick in a little bit extra, but well worth it IMHO: HERE (http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?L1=L1_9590&L2=unknown.1&SKU=55216)

I really like their Glass Cleaner and Wheel Cleaner (Griot really makes sure you know "its recommended by BBS wheels!")

Again, you'd need to kick in a little more cash, but how 'bout a set of rubbers (http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?&SKU=44620) to wear when you're washing the cars.

CLay bar and lube would be nice.

Yeah, clay bar and speed shine is a good way to go. I also like their window cleaner.

I tried their finger detail mits - the green foam ones, and didn't care for them too much.

The 3 finger mitts are great for wheels...IMHO

How much is the Speed Shine kit?

I think it is a bit more than the $25 allowance, but not that much.

Hmmm. Does the lifetime warranty at Griots include torn/ripped green foam?

Since you don't need speed shine, interior cleaner. You don't appreciate how good it works until you have something on the interior that you know won't come out. For example, I had to have the windshield replaced on the e46 and the installer left matching grease smudges on the a pillar liners. I was sure the piece would have to be replaced, but Griot's interior cleaner took it right out.

I am not a fan of the wheel cleaner personally. I have some wheel only wash mits and use soap (car wash soap). I don't notice a difference in effort between using the wheel cleaner and just using the soap. Of course, you have to have a second bucket or change the water before you wash the car.

Yeah, I have no probelm with the soap on my wheels; I would just like soemthing that can get into the little basketweave crevices. I have no leather in the interior - cloth and vinyl - so I don't really have stains. I have clay and Quick Detailer.

Three finger mitts, hmm - I'll check 'em out.

They make some foam things that I used on the e46 wheel crevices. They might work for the basket weave. Let me see if I can find a link. The three finger sponges rock as well.
