Also, if you don't gun it pretty strong at takeoff, the engine bogs down severely until the revs finally climb to about 2200 RPM. Forget about doing a rolling start in 2nd. I can assume that some of this is due to the tightness of the engine. Is it at all possible that they program the DBW throttle to minimize power and revs during break-in?

even though your car is new, it may not have the latest/greatest software update, v.38.

I need to take ours in soon and get it done on ours.

I totally agree about the HK too.

I also need v.38, car idles roughly in the mornings.

Shouldn't software updates and recall items (if any) be part of the pre-delivery checklist at the dealer? Or even at the VDC? Damn, BMW...

1000 miles already? Wow!

I have learned to downshift into first in this car. You will never do great rolling starts in second.

I also have been getting frustrated on the highway lately b/c of the lack of power (I don't have the super charger). It seems like I can put the BMW into the position I want on the highway with a thought. With the MINI, I have to think about it, down shift a lot, do a little bit of acceleration planning, and hope the spot I was aiming for is still there when I get there. heh.

So after the frustration builds up for awhile, I go flog it over a mountain or two and it's all good again. It really is fun to drive in the twisties.

Fortunately, it does let you downshift to first while moving, and without any fuss. Most transmissions seem reluctant to let you do this.

Yeah, I double-clutch into first in the MINI, and I do rolling 2nd gear in my 330. You just have to get used to the MCS.

It also helps a lot to drive with DSC off.

I opted out of the sport package and DSC. The only thing in the SP that actually improves performance was the marginally better tires. I can buy a new set for signifcantly less than $1300 price of admission.

Good choice! SP is pretty useless, I wouldn't get that myself. But it's my girlfriend's car and DSC comes in handy in the rain for her, well, at least until she goes out to the track with me.... heh...

Did you need to complain about anything in order to get the software update?

I've been noticing that the engine never really starts all that well when cold. It's rather sluggish (for lack of a better term), and seems to stumble a lot before finally catching. That might be a fuel regulator, though.

no, I just said I wanted the v.38 installed.

however, my invoice says:

A C/S stumble at accel or cold start

Scanned no faults found reprogrammed DME with latest software

ours does the exact same thing

it did seem better when I started her up today just to check it out

While I'm at it, does your's seem to have a dead spot in the power delivery right around 3100 RPM? Mine accelerates fine up until 3000, then power drops off noticeably until almost 4000. Also, if I hold it in, say, 3rd gear at 3100 RPM, the engine power surges up/down noticeably for as long as I maintain that engine speed.

I also have a terrible engine lag when starting from a stop in 1st gear. If I don't hit the gas pretty aggressively while letting out the clutch, I get almost zero power for about 2-3 seconds. It feels like the same effect when the full traction control engages in the 330i. You get almost no thrust until the tires have adequate traction. I been driving with the traction control off, and doesn't seem to have any effect. Something just doesn't seem right.

I've not noticed any dead spot

I think the engine lag you're describing is the "stumble" that v.38 is supposed to address.

Ours has displayed this problem a bit, and it does seem to be better now.

When was yours built? I think the v.38 just started hitting dealers in June or July.

Late June build. Took delivery at the end of July.

I want to know what exhaust they were using! :awe:

Damn, and to think I haven't gave it much consideration as of late...
