Sent to me by a colleague:
He was rotating her tires. She does not have the sports package [on her 2001 330i]. He set the torque wrench for 85 pounds. As he was tighting this particular lug nut, it seemed loose and was not griping. He backed it out and found it stretched out as seen from the pics.

Also he said BMW manual recommended 74 pounds of torque.

I'm not really sure what I'm looking at there... do you think it was defective and cast that way or worn down some how. Whatever caused that, it does not look good. :(

I understand that it looked fine when it came out for the wheel removal, so... :?

:? But wasn't there a TSB that changed the torque settings to ~88, superceding the old 74 ft. lbs. in the manual?

Yep, changed to 88.

Yeah, but he had the wrench set to 85, so that's not the issue with this bolt.

So mentioning that the owner's manual said 74 pounds was a red herring? ;)

Is it simply possible the Torque Wrench was not calibrated properly? I would think that it would cause damage to the bolt, but not necessarily like that.

That almost looks like the end of the bolt hit a wall and he kept tightening, causing the bolt to twist in the middle. The change of shape would likely cause the loose feeling. Of course, this is all just guess work, but obviously something went wrong.

I have torqued all the lug bolts on the E46 and the Z3 at 88 lbs. each time and there is never a problem.

It looks like a defective bolt to me.

You'd have to work pretty hard to over torque a bolt like that.

You'd have to work pretty hard to over torque a bolt like that.3500lb/ft

Seriously though, I have to work around torque wrenches all the time. is it possible the wrench used was dropped or defective? If not, I'd say a defective bolt.

That is just wrong!

Ditto, looks like metal fatique, or bad metal. At least there was no damage to the hub. (was there??)

That thing looks like my suspension bolts when I over-tightened it.

My guess is it either got cross-threaded.
