The world's maddest battles usually earn a brief sobriquet: Red vs. Blue, Holyfield-Tyson, Lingerie Bowl. Although the battle we'll describe today isn't finished, the clash of HUMMER vs. Any Decent Off-roader - especially HUMMER vs. Jeep - has made so much noise on Autoblog alone that we decided it was time to investigate. Not having a Jeep at our disposal, we pitted an H2 against the Toyota Landcruiser on three trails in the California desert to find out if either of them had any quit - or if they'd keep going but complain about it. Follow the jump for the answer we came up with, and check out the gallery of off-road shenanigans below.

I read the whole article, looked at all the pictures . . and kept waiting for them to take these offroad.

Seemed like mostly gravel roads. :dunno:

Also, for serious offroading, I'll take the H2's mechanical locking diffs over Toyota's electronic brake gizmos. There are times, often, when that electronic brake type traction control just can't cope with obstacles on the trail.

Of course, for serious offroading I'd pick a different vehicle than either of these.

And I don't buy their lighter, cheaper argument for the electronic nannies. Ok, maybe cheaper as it can be tied into the ABS system. . . but lighter? You still have to have a differential, the difference is that the locking differential has the ability to lock. The weight difference might be a couple pounds at most.

Stay tuned next month for Rubicon vs. H3T on a 7-rated, 23.6 mile monstrosity of a trail. The battle rages.

Cool. Should be fun. I'll keep an eye out. I have a lot more faith in the H3s as an offroad machine than I do in the H2s. They'er lighter and smaller and (I think) have better clearances). It'll be a closer comparison to pair the H3T to a 4-door Wrangler but the 2-door Wrangler Rubicon would be the best offroader from Jeep with it's shorter wheelbase and better breakover angles.
