The painfully slow undressing of the 2010 Mustang continues today with a clear shot of the car's new shifter. Specifically, we can see that a five-speed stick is still standard-fare for the pony car from Ford, though its closest competitors, namely the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro, are equipped with six row-for-yourself ratios. On the positive side, the gear knob looks very high class and appears hewn from aluminum. Judging from the last teaser (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/08/ford-releases-full-dash-pic-of-2010-mustang/), the matte aluminized finish is carried out through much of the GT's interior, from the shifter to the steering wheel and dash. There are five more teaser images to be revealed before the 'Stang's final reveal at the LA Auto Show (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/LA+2008/), where we'll be on hand to bring you the goods in living color. For now, all of Ford's early teasers can be seen in our gallery below.

Six gears would be nice, but if both 5th and 6th are overdriven I don't see the point, other than to bump up the fuel econ numbers. The Mustang, truth be told, is pretty well-geared even with only 5 cogs.

Also, steel gearshift knobs are stupid.

That might be why it's aluminum.

Brrrr... that'd be cold in the winters.

How many times do I get to say I don't care about their teaser images?

I haven't driven a late model mustang on the highway, so I don't know how well it does with 5 gears, but the 330 was crying for a sixth gear. Granted, 5th gear was direct drive.

but the 330 was crying for a sixth gear.

I rarely used the 6th gear in my 330. Too tall.

The Mustang has a fairly tall O/D fifth gear, so that isn't really an issue. Of course, you can always use more choices (to a point), but in my time in a new Mustang I never really felt like it needed a sixth gear.

If "rarely" meant "when I was at steady highway speeds for relatively long periods of time," I still would have been happy to have it. The whole idea was to drop the cruising rpm at 75.

I have yet to use 6th in the M5. 75 in fifth is lazy enough.

I like what I see so far in the mustang. If they really do upgrade the interior parts of the car it will go a long way in fixing what I hate about it.

I still think if I had a choice of the three (Mustang, Camaro or Challenger) I would still get the Challenger. Heavy as it is it still looks the best to me inside and out. Give me a silver and black 6spd SRT8.

True for the e46... You needed >85mph to keep it in 6. The e90, not so... Better torque/gearing (?), and it's good to 70 or below.

Hm, so far I'm liking the Camaro the most. I don't know why but I suspect GM / Chevy will have a better shot at coming out with a better handling car of the three. Given that the power should be pretty similar between all three I'll take that extra handling.

Visually, I like the Camaro better, too. Of course, all I've seen on the Ford are what's in the parts bin. . . no full photos of the whole car. The parts look good, though.

The Challenger just doesn't register on my radar. I've seen it but . . . meh.

Iirc, 75 in fifth in the 330 was about 3500 rpm and it really would have been better at a lower rpm. I don't know how well the 6 speed they went to worked, I was just commenting on the need to have an over drive available. And it's a nitpicky "need." Road trips in that car didn't make me think "wow this gearing sucks" as my first thought. That's all I was commenting on.

The CTS-V did 75 at 1500 rpm I think. At most, it was 2000. That was a very different experience (and I still never got more than 18 mpg, even on long trips).

It's been a few years, but I don't recall the gearing being that short. Even with the "ZHP™".

I think I'm about 3000 rpm in 5th at 70-75-ish, and that's with the "lower" ZHP gearing in the rear diff with the 6 spd. I'll check tonight on the way home, though.

3000 rpm in 6th is about 80 mph I think.

Ok, for the ZHP . . .

75 mph
3100 rpm in 5th
2600 rpm in 6th

Drop those numbers by 100-200 rpm for 70 mph.

Now I need to read back and figure out why I'm posting the ZHP's cruising RPM rates in a thread about Mustang teaser pics. . .
