Since the other 1 series thread got hijacked by Mustang lovers...
I got a chance to peek at the May Automobile over lunch today.
Damn. I want one of those bad. It's about the only car I can think of right now that makes me want to do an MBR and start planning out my finances over the next five years so I can get my grubby hands on one.
With due respect to JST's WRX, I think this will be the true sucessor to the E30 M3, if Goeschel is to be believed.
Can someone talk me out of it? Please?

They're not available now.
*phew* That was easy.
I do understand your feeling. I like the recent styling directions, but I don't like the general trend over the past two+ decades of the cars getting steadily bigger. I want a BMW with modern styling that is light in weight and light on features.
I want one too.
The thing is, I see no reason to be talked out of it.

Cars are such terrible assets. I don't want to buy or lease new cars every 4-5 years. I fully intended to keep my two Bimmers for 10+, and while I am sure the E53 will go the distance, I am not sure about my fidelity to the E46.
Test driving the Z4 wrecked things for me. I am craving a light nimble tossable car to drive everyday.

Brand spanking new RX-8s go for cheap and they are availble today.

He might not be into spanking.
I want one also. I just hope BMW AG doesn't royally f**k up the interior.
I'm tempted on one when they become available too.
Talk you out of it? Why? Save the money. If the car never makes it or it doesn't live up to expectations, spend it on something else. Like Clyde said in the Mustang thread, it's a great time to be a driver (yeah, I paraphrased it a bit, but the meaning is the same).

M2 looks good.
Look at it this way:
It will be late 2005 at the earliest by the time we see any 1 series derivatives in the US.
That means M2s will be here, earliest, late 2006, probably as 2007 MY cars.
The lines will be long, and gouging will be the rule. Don't expect to buy one for list until mid 2008, if not 2009.
So, you've got 5 years to wait.
Plenty of time.

I feel like a certain "mbr" saying this, but I'm thinking it might be the ticket for me in 2007. :P

Well, thanks! That certainly was a buzz kill. :?

M2 sounds promising.
as JeSTer noted, however, since it's going to be even more attainable than the m3 (and they are getting common in major metro areas), the waiting list will be huge.
and i also daresay that the demographic that it attracts might turn off TD. just a guess.
:-)
Bah.
I just again fear that BMW won't send it here.

JST: Your logic is evil.
TD/Clyde: E36M3's are great, just getting older and out of warranty. I'm having a hard time just keeping up with oil changes on my own. As for the Mazda, sorry, I am just not into Japanese cars.
lemming: I wonder about the 'cachet' of the M2. Will it be bling enough for the Gen XYZ crowd? I am hoping it will sneak under the radar of everyone but enthusiasts...too small and raw for the old rich set, too 'cheap' and common for the wealthy heir set. Any hope of this happening?

if you're concerned about long waiting lists and price gouging, just put down a deposit now :dunno:
or at least make sure you're in early with one

'kruger:
i think it will attract the young'uns in spades and us older gents might be scared away from that demographic taking over the m2.
'course, if it's slower than a wrx, i'd bow out quickly.
