...go back in time and order any car of the past, and bring in back to the present day in its brand new condition. What would it be?

I used to think I'd bring back an orange (what was the color name?) 2002. But with all this talk of E30 M3s, that's probably what I would order. In Hellrot. Omigod, that's an incredible color.

(Edited by TD to eliminate thread title which triggered an annoying Cher song as an earworm.)

Pre-war 328 in red, then sell it at Barret Jackson for $1,000,000 and go buy me a 996 GT3 and a Modena 360 Strasdale. :)

Tricky.

Would it have to be a car that I could afford?

If not, either a 60s era Ferrari 250 GTO or a Deusenberg SJ.

Or maybe the 1984 288 GTO, which is IMHO the best looking modern Ferrari.

If I had to be able to pay for it, maybe a late 50s Plymouth Belvedere:

Ferrari GTO or E30 M3.

Probably a 63 fastback vette

I Have A Dream. I want to, when I have more money than sense, get a '68 fastback Mustang. I want to do the insane amount of fabrication and screwing around one would need to drop an S52 in it. Redo the suspension and put some decent tires on it (I'll have to do reseach to see if that's even possible). Redo the interior and repaint the exterior Bullitt green.

Curb weight stock is around 2800lbs. Since the engine was mostly iron, I bet it'll drop weight with the aluminum engine. Wheeeee! And it'll run on curent gas and have current emissions.

Yes, I said it's a dream. :D

Probably an E30 M3, although they weren't exactly cheap when they were brand new.

S52 is iron block+aluminum heads, no?

There are a LOT of better options for a 68 Mustang than the S52, even if you want to pass current emissions. Any number of 351 derivations would probably be best, but of course you could also use a blown 302, or a stroked 302.

Or a 427.

But if you really want a 1968 Mustang that passes current emissions and uses current gas, buy a 2005 Mustang. :D

That was kind of my point. For my obscene amount of cash, I want a smaller OLD (as in REALLY old) house with gobs of character in a neighborhood with gobs of character not a mansion in the country.

doesn't say much for New Orleans that the house listed is only asking $1.2e6.

try driving through weston or lincoln-sudbury and houses about 1/3 less living space ask more.

LOL.

i'd be thrilled if i could have one of those split window corvettes from 1967 (?). old cars, in general, have zero appeal for me otherwise.

I'm not at all into really old cars. But my interest goes further back with European cars than it does with American cars. Old American cars hold zero appeal to me (and the vast majority of new ones hold no appeal as well- but that goes without saying).

But, really, I'm stuck on BMWs from the late '80s/early '90s. E30s, E34s, E28s, E32s (the modern heighday for BMW, IMO)

this is an odd feeling i have these days.

i've never felt it before.

but my car wanderlust has shriveled up and died.

maybe that's what happens when cosmic karma hits and you meet your "match". i'm pretty thrilled with my car right now. maybe i was always meant to be an open-shirt wearing, gold chain posturing corvette guy.

the problem is that today's true sports cars? the majority of them eclipse, by far, any car from antiquity. and if performance is the bottomline, then looking backwards is futile.

to me, it's like those people who collect those original Macintoshes. i just don't get it.

That's funny. I was thinking that--apart from those horrible Capris and Sebrings--most convertibles seem to age better than their solid-roof counterparts.

Almost all convertibles of the past look good to me. I really have a hankering for an E30 convertible. But it would have to be a third car. And we can't deal with a third car right now.

In all likelihood, though, if I was planning on driving it much (and i would), the L71 engine would be a better option.

but it's the same idea, isn't it? but on a grander scale. you can't really do anything with those computers, but at least they fit in a closet. if you're into performance, what do you do with a vintage car? drive it? most people don't. they just look at them and keep them in warehouses.
