View Full Version : I think my cars have spoiled me.
Despite the fact that my BMW is superior in every performance category, the engine in my Benz (2.6L: I-6) sounds amazing. It is silky smooth but with a nice background rip when I hold a gear. It doesn't like to rev past 5K rpms (6200 redline), but as it approaches redline it just makes the coolest sound.
The BMW is nice, and it also sounds great when it gets past 3500rpm and higher, but it also gets VERY loud and, though smooth, has more of a hot rod sound than a expensive,high-tech sound like the one the 190E makes.
I say this because last night I drove my mom's Volvo XC70 and the thing sounded like a truck. The manumatic auto tranny in the volvo is positively useless. It takes about 2-3 seconds to make a shift. You're better off just leaving it in auto and stomping on the gas. I'm sure to blame for the engine note was the fact that the tranny is always keeping rpm's at 1500-2000, but even when I revved it, it wasn't good. Impressive though, that the volvo could get around ok with the engine running at only 1500rpm or so. That's about the only compliment I can give it though. Maybe it's too linear in its delivery, but that engine was no fun at all. And again, the entire car is so damn isolated and numb.
Then I think that we may end up with an SUV and I realize that they will probably feel/drive worse than the XC70 and I get all upset.

Ever driven one past 4000rpm? Do so and then talk to me.
Like I said, I love my 330i and it spanks the 190E in all performance areas and it is a blast to drive compared to the 190E.
I'm not the only one with this opinion (re: engine sound).

Well, it is hard to explain. I actually stole the decription from an article I read along time ago about the C42 V8.
I dunno how to explain it. I'll try to record both when I get a chance and you'll see (or hear, rather).
I'm just wondering what an "expensive" sound is
To him Benz (and their engines) sounds expensive... but to me they sound like shit, last year in Seattle I put about 1k miles on my friend's then-brand-new C320, that engine sounded like a truck!

I thought an "expensive" engine sound is a rattlerattleclackaclacka... you know, a sound that indicates an expensive repair to come.

ha ha ha ha.
this is the best.
you do realize that all of the premium car makers put microphones all over their cars and record the sounds for "premium sound", don't you? they tune their cars accordingly.
ha ha ha ha.
i'd like to be in sound quality control.

Wow, does it get really loud? That's amazing man.

FYI, my car was one of the last MB's to be built back when MB built some of the best and most reliable cars in the world. My engine is a bullet-proof inline-6, not the cheap-ass V-6's they started selling in 1994. I can't speak for the C320.
And I don't know where you get that "to me Benz sounds expensive", and frankly I don't even understand your comment.

i guess i don't know what expensive sounds like, either.
i describe it more as "gutless racket" --> typical 4 banger economy car engine, "quiet" --> lexus, or "powerful".
powerful most often correlates with expensive vehicles, but as my domestic household would demonstrate, quite the inverse. :-)
the expensive car is the most quiet and the most slow.

Probably so. And as you can read from above, I fully admit that the car is slow, and handles like crap. I just happen to like the sound when the revs get high vs. that of the 330i. It is just silky smooth with a cool-sounding whine in the background.
The value of the X-Country isn't in performance, it's in the amount of stuff it will hold in a mostly car shaped body. Our V70 doesn't even have the benefit of the more powerful engine or awd, but we wouldn't trade it. It carries the dogs too well and fits a ridiculous amount of stuff in it with the back seats down.
IMO, the ZHP exhaust upgrade isn't much of an upgrade. I used to think it was at lower rpms, but then I heard some of the Remus exhausts the LA guys have. I would be interested to see if you thought the same thing about the non-ZHP 330.

I've said in previous reviews of my parent's XC that it is probably the BEST family car out there, provided you can get by its lack of driver involvement. It really is tough to beat considering what it offers and how comfortable and roomy it is. No question. If I could find one within our budget, I'd look into one as well (and I may look at the first gen XC).
But that is the point of my thread. That my 2 cars are so good in different ways that I find the XC to be dull and unrefined (mechanically).
I've also mentioned before that I could do without the ZHP exhaust. That said, I don't think it's too bad. Maybe it's just me, but it sounds as if past 5000rpm, the engine sound drowns the exhaust sound.
If I end up keeping the 330i long enough for it to need a new muffler, I'll certainly look at something else besides the OEM one.

That will be a long, long time, I think. The stainless steel exhaust on my parents' '94 Seville was still going strong after 7 years and 120k miles when it left the family.

Hey, if I don't have to touch the thing, then even better. :D I don't think the whole muffler is SS, though. I think it is just the tips. The muffler in the 190E seems to not last very long at all.
