A/S recommendations

I'm getting too old and tired to do the summer/winter tire switch, plus I've moved to a more moderate climate. AND my summer tires are at the end of their lifespan. Come Fall, I'd like to move to all seasons year-round and dump the run-flat summers.

I have two sets of rims--16-inch for the winters and staggered 17s for the summer.

What would you do (besides stick with summers):

Buy square all seasons and put them on the 16s? By a staggered set and put them on the 17s?

Anyone like a specific all season tire more than another? I'm looking at the latest Michelin Pliot Sport A/S 3+. I had a previous version on the 330i and the M3 and like them fine.

I'd use whichever wheels you prefer on the car. Staggered would mean only side-side rotation, so the rears would wear out faster and be slightly more expensive to replace, but it would fall out in the averages.

I've never had Pilot Sports... But usually have had A/S (the Boxster was the exception...) The Tesla is the first car I've had to replace a full set of tires on in a long time (only other time was on the E39)...

It depends. Do you really care about having snow performance, or would you be satisfied with great cold weather performance?

If you want a summery tire that is insane in the wet and mostly insensitive to cold, the Continental DW (summer) is great.

If you want the least awful performance A/S tire, the Michelin is probably your best bet. The DWS is a real and meaningful compromise.

Because it's CT, I still have a need to switch to winter tires (non-staggered on my set of 17's ASA) but I can drive the all seasons deeper into the season before switching.

The Conti's have been great, they have terrific wet weather performance and provide a good ride when the temps drop (unlike my old Pilot Sports summer tires, which turned rock hard when the temps dropped below 40).

Because of the mild winter, I never switched to winter tires this season ... I got away with it.

You should have gone with the DW. They drive just as far into the winter as the DWS, ride well, are quiet, and are even better in the wet. They are better in every way, except for in actual snow.

I run DW all 4 seasons on my 1er. To Nick's point they serve me well in everything except actual frozen precipitation. They suck in that, but I have the 2 wagons w/ snows for the 5 or 6 days a winter we don't have cleared roads. I'd think in ATL, you'd be fine on the DW as long as you have access to the X5 in emergencies.

Ice is really rare -- we had one ice storm warning when I was in ATL, but it ended up not being an issue (there may have been some icy roads in isolated areas, but nothing impacted me).

Perhaps its my sun belt bias, but winter tires never even crossed my mind when I was in Atlanta... I drove to work once in snow -- there was perhaps 1/4" on the road (and a bit more on grass)... Roads were empty since everyone else stayed home (and I went home around 10:30am since the office was empty...)

Yep. I'm not too worried. Just need decent coldish weather wet traction, mostly.

I had those tires back in 2009 when I had a MB C350 rear wheel drive and I thought they were very good in the winter weather I'm surprised you need to change them out.

Do you have any pictures of the wheel choices ... it would help me make my decision :eeps: oops I mean it would help decide which ones I think you should go with :D

I really like the General Altimax RT43 that we have on the CR-V. They were cheap, but they've been great in snow and good getting around everyday in city driving.

Sure.

The fall photo is with the 16-inch winters. The other with 17-inch summers. I do notice the steering has a chunk more effort with the 17s.

Looks wise I'd go with the 17's, they really are sharp looking and give a nice aggressive look. Are those from the E9x LCI ?

Thanks! Yes, E91 LCI. Standard wheels with the sport package.

Keep the factory 17s and pull the appropriately sized A/S tires on those. It'll look much better! I think the 17" wheel is the right compromise for the E9x. I downgraded my 18" summers to 17" with A/S and I think it still looks ok. 16s would look too small
