Hey Stuka where did you get the wide screen version from? Ebay?
I have a buddy that just got an 00 M5 and wants to switch the nav out also.

Terry gave me this link which is where I ended up buying it from.
They even did the UK default for you to get rid of the annoying Accept button.

Thanks man I will pass it on.
So I see the widescreen works with the cd nav drive or the dvd nav drive. Not to be stupid but whats the upshot of also switching to the dvd drive over the cd drvie unit?
EDIT: Nevermind I found it. Thanks http://www.bimmernav.com/why_mkiv.htm

I have the widescreen nav (CD based) on my 2001 E38.
I have been debating on upgrading to the DVD based unit....
I hate to 'fix' something that isn't really broken (from my standpoint)...
But since I do use the nav functionality quite often, how much better is it?
And.. It's a simple matter of removing the CD drive and installing the DVD unit - and then programming as noted above?
Just curious. I'm not going to do anything real quick, but just thinking right now.
Thanks for any info -

If you travel outside the boundaries of your local CD map, the DVD is a huge improvement. I also think the map coverage (POI, etc.) on the DVD is better than on the CD.
The DVD unit is a lot faster at updating the display, computing routes, etc. And if you use the "direction of travel" map view, the map moves under the centered icon of your car, rather than your car icon moving across the screen and the map then "jumping" when you get near the edge of the map.
There is also a perspective view, if you care. It is kind of a gimmick (you lose most street names in that mode).
If you change the radio tuner later on, you'll get satellite radio / iPod / aux input support. If you change the radio tuner and CD changer later on, you'll get support for MP3 ID tags on the NAV screen.
It is a simple swap of the NAV computer -2 locking connectors (blue and purple) and the GPS antenna cable. NAV computers sold by bimmernav have the latest OS installed and are in Euro (no-accept) mode. You or your dealer can re-code to US mode (which now has auto-accept after 10 seconds) if you want. You'll also want the latest DVD map.

It took me over an hour and a lot of swearing to get the CDROM unit out.
I followed the instruction and made the four release pins using the wire hanger, and it just would not budge. I finally was able to somehow get my hand behind the unit to push it a little while the mrs press on the four release points with the four wire hanger pins and got it out.
It was the biggest pain in the ass.
But the unit works pretty well.
