I've gotten some quick quotes online from a few different sources, but does anyone have some information/tips about shipping a car from the PA/MD area to California? A close relative has decided to live out there and thinks shipping a car is no big deal. I realize it's easy to do now, but the quotes I'm seeing are all over $1k. Has anyone used a shipping company for this purpose that they trust or would recommend?

I've already suggested selling the car and buying something there...

There's a thread here on this topic with recommendations.

When I've relocated, the relo company used DAS. Last time was in 2004 though. Back then price was at least $800 for GA to AZ, so $1k plus is realistic these days.

I used Intercity to move the X5 from Arkansas to Boston. They aren't cheap, but weren't enough more $ to make it worth my time shopping around more.

I searched but couldn't find the thread. I don't think the car is worth shipping but not my choice...

I know they're reputable, but I assumed they'd be very expensive. I'll see what they estimate.

Search can be finicky at times... I found it by searching for "Dependable Auto" -- which is what DAS stands for (Dependable Auto Shippers)...

I'd check with DAS for a quote also. http://www.dasautoshippers.com

While at it, UPS also ships cars (Tesla used them to deliver mine to my house...). http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/bussol/browse/autogistics.html?srch_pos=1&srch_phr=autogistics

Thanks. I'm going to again advise against doing this, but we'll see. It's a small SUV, so the quotes seem to have an upcharge for that as well.

So, the answer is that shipping a car isn't a big deal, but it costs money. It generally costs less than driving across, though.
