View Full Version : 2013 Golf R

If I'm going to get the S4, the R needs to go.

This is a well cared for example. The miles are higher than average due to a 30 mile each way commute that is entirely highway - and not even stop and go. Interior is perfect. Exterior is marred only by a few paint chips on the hood and some minor scrapes under the front air dam.

42,500 miles. Only option available on the car was a package that included the sunroof and NAV. It's got that.

This is probably the best all around car I've ever owned. I have a feeling I may regret selling it. It just does everything extremely well while being practical and fairly invisible.

I have it listed at Autotrader for more but I really would like to get $28K out of it.

GLWS. Nice car.

EDIT: So did you never do that shift knob mod, or did you undo it for the sale?

I did the shift knob. The exterior pics were taken this afternoon. The interior pics are from when I first got it. I tentatively plan to put the stock knob back.

The salesman I was working with hasn't replied to my emails.

I don't mind starting over. Timing isn't an issue. In fact, I'm glad I'm not being rushed.

I do wonder what happened.

Will you bother checking out a 340 and/or ATS, new Golf, etc or are you all set on the S4

I love the left-field suggestions. My next car will be a four door with decent rear leg room.

And we still have an E46 M3 convertible. That box is already checked.

(And holy shit, that's a lot of money. No way I'm not getting a 911 if I'm forking out that much cash.)

Why do I have this strange feeling I'm going to regret selling this car?

Unless the deal falls through, it's sold for $26K. Considering it's now got just under 45K miles on it, that's above KBB by more than $500. I paid $33,900 for it new back in January 2013.

On a per month basis, that's not too shabby.

Not bad for you at all... They have kept crazy value.

That said, Jan 2013 was kind of a low point in the economy. I sold my 2011 Cay S then, for various reasons, and they have barely - if at all - dropped. I'd understand that in a 8-10 yr old car, but I don't understand it when a car goes from two to four years old. The e46 m3's are same or higher.

TD
10-14-2015, 06:28 PM
Although we have no plans to sell it, I wonder what we could get for our '06 M3 vert. I haven't looked up values in over a year. It's still under 30K miles.

Tracking ST prices, looks like I'd see a similar percentage if I sold. But Only 33k miles on the ST, so, meh. Kind of surprising...more that the Ford has held up that well. I've had this running mental comparison between your car and mine since we got the, about the same time and they're basically same segment.

So does that mean you're pulling the trigger on an S4? Or just driving the M3 for a while?

Not pulling the trigger on anything yet. I made the mistake of looking at the lease deals on 340s. So now I need to find one to drive before I do anything. I prefer the looks and AWD of the S4. But it's a sort of due diligence to check the BMW out first.

And I still haven't ruled out waiting to find the unicorn F10 535i M-sport manual in the right color combo, even if that takes a while (if this had the sport seats, it'd be tempting- http://cpo.bmwusa.com/certified/BMW/2013-BMW-535i+Sedan-ec68b31f0a0a000240e8fdaee71551f6.htm?geoZip=20850) . Also, I can't rule out buying the S4 used if I find a good example.

So, yeah, I'll split time between the M3 and the E39 until I figure it out. But I won't be able to stand doing that for more than a few months.

Currently leaning toward finding the unicorn - a 2013 535i M-sport 6-spd in a decent color and with most of my preferred options. Might take a while.

It would help if people stopped listing their wankermatics as manuals.

I'll be surprised if you like it. Considering you thought the F30 was dead feeling, the F10 is supposedly significantly worse.

One interesting note, the x-drive F10s had hydraulic steering. From reviews it doesn't make a lick of difference in feel though.

That last one isn't m-sport either.

As I recall everyone saying the 535i is as fast as the 550i, I'll happily pocket the ~$15K price difference, even if it means taking a few months to find a desirable copy.

But I need to drive one with a slushy and also find a 340i to drive.

I still really like the S4 but now think I'd probably go used if I go that route.

I mentioned this a while back. One of the boxes I want to check with the next car purchase is a back seat large enough to fit adult-sized children comfortably.

And I really dislike how the front end of the F30 looks.

I will still probably just end up leasing a 340i when all is said and done. But I'll waste a few months getting to that answer.

I have no idea where you heard that, I've had both and there isn't even a comparison in speed ... The 535 is a nice quick car, the 550 is insanely fast.

Btw you're the last person I can see liking a 5 series ... you seriously should drive one even if it is the automatic.

EDIT: I should add the 535 is plenty of power and the extra power of the 550 is not needed. Kind of like the discussion on the other thread about the Corvette Z06 ... To me the 535 is the perfect mount of power a car should have, fast enough to be considered a fast car but not overly so where the power is almost unusable on normal roads.

This is exactly why it's hard for me to get rid of my car. It's 13y old and it's still plenty fast. Unless I track my next car I can't use anything with more power. Now better handling that's a different story. That's what will ultimately make me switch.

Curious to hear your report on the 340i test drive.

What is the collective opinion on the 550i/N63 engine? Isn't this the model that chomps batteries once per year? Is there a 550i 6MT model year that doesn't have this problem?

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/buying-maintenance/a25710/enginerdy-strange-connections-bmw-n63-v8/

By the way, I have driven a 550i and a 535i and while the latter is 'enough', the power levels are quite different. That said, the v8 car feels even more 'out of touch', whether that's a good or bad thing is up to the driver.

I felt the same way about the 550 in 2013 when I test drove it,it was too quiet. In 2014 they upped the horsepower and made the engine louder which made he car feel like a 550 should.

Also I know finding a manual will be hard enough but if he can find one with the dynamic handling package with the adaptive suspension it makes a huge difference making the car feel a lot more connected to the road in sport mode.

Btw I should add ... Save a lot of money for tire's you're going to need it !!

Somehow i missed this thread until now. What's the latest on the car search?

One thing about Msport F10s to keep in mind- they didn't come with the sport suspension until August 2013 ("704" in BMW option speak). Before that, the only suspension option was DHP which some like and some hate.

So if that's the reason you're looking for msport cars, you might want to just buy the best F10 manual you can find and then put an aftermarket suspension on it. The black 2011 that someone posted in October looked pretty nice (and the price is right). I also second the motion to atleast drive any 535 you can find to see whether the size/weight/steering bugs you at all. A 2013+ RWD msport 535 would represent the F10 chassis at its "best" , while a base 11 or 12 would be the sloppiest. They continually tweaked the steering over the years as well. They actually did produce (theoretically atleast) some 2014s with manuals, but that would be a real unicorn. I coulda/shoulda back then but my wife vetoed it

I actually really like my F10, but it will take a while to acclimate to the much bigger size given the cars you have had in the past. My wife still complains about it. Its still one of my favorite current sedan designs.

Someone suggested the Chevy SS. On paper, that sounds perfect for your needs/wants.Some journalists have compared it to the e39 m5. What are your thoughts on it?

One other crazy possibility: An F10 M5. They have dropped like rocks (of course), and you might be able to find a wider selection of manual equipped cars. Steering and handling would be better. Even so, a new S4 might be more appealing to you at a similar price.

To be a little bit fair, he probably doesn't actually plan to drive it like that. Air suspension is great for hard parking.

If this were a Stephen King novel, your old car would come back and seek revenge on you ;)
