And some valets even showed a disgust when I handed them the key to the E30 like it's beneath them or something.

Reason number 923 why I don't patronize valet only restaurants/clubs. If someone's going to drive my car like a jackass it's going to be me :D

But what can you do if the damn closing dinner is at a valet only place?:banghead:

:)
(valets smoked a clutch on one of my cars and i tend to avoid them like the plague if i can)
I was forced to valet my cars when my wife was at Brigham and women's hospital. But they were very well run, the parking garage was line-of-sight close, and they were so busy they had no chance. I checked my odometer and less than 1 mile had been driven. Still, after the first night, I started taking the 70R. A silver slushy wagon is a lot less tempting.
The guy from the post is a moron.
...I love this exchange further down that thread...
Dude #1: BTW, nice ride Jetlag, why did you let her go [Gallardo]?
Dude #2: I decided that a house might have been a better use of the money.
...nah, really?

My parents went to a reception at a local hotel one afternoon about 20 years ago. The parking was valet and it was in an underground garage. They handed the key off and started walking for the door. They heard the car speed off and crash into a wall 100 feet away. My mom's '82(?) Wagoneer was totaled. The valet wasn't acting like an ass, he was just incompetent. It doesn't matter whether it's an interesting car or not.
I don't have a problem with valet parking being an option for those that want it. I can park my own fucking car myself, though, thank you very much.

+10
I worked as a valet one summer. Two of the six valets didn't know how to drive a manual trans.
The only cars I remember being damaged were a Taurus and a full-sized Ford van.

Did you hit the van with the Taurus or the other way around?
:p

I completely agree. The time at the hospital was the first time I ever had to valet my car. I had no choice. It was the only parking offered.

I was parking a full-size truck with those extended trailer mirrors next to the van, while looking over my right shoulder to avoid backing it into shrubs/poles I put the driver's side mirror through the side window of the van :o
The Taurus was another guy. He was in a big a hurry and jumped in and gunned it. He didn't realize that whoever parked it left the wheel turned (we were told to NEVER do this.) The front end swung around and a pole removed the fender and front bumper.

I don't have an issue with someone driving my car

You should see some of the cars around here that get valet parked regularly in the city. The rear bumper looks like someone smacked it with a hammer about 1000 times. Paint chips all over it that can be seen from 25 feet away.
Space is tight, so "park by feel" is a common solution. Combined with "hurry up dude, there are more cars coming!" is a recipe for disaster.
I valet daily. I don't like it, but whatever. I've resigned myself to the inevitability of door dings and little scratches that I did not cause. It's just the way it is in NYC.

I'd be taking the bus or subway. I'm very particular about my cars, and like to keep them as perfect as possible.

I prefer door dings to 100-degree subway platforms and packed human cattle cars ripe with the scents of BO and urine.

Door dings vs. BO and urine.
Hm . . . Damn, that's a really tough decision.

But you miss out on the TB laden coughs on the back of your neck, slimy things of unknown origin that you manage to touch, and on and on...

Good point about the subway. Do they have bus service into downtown NY? Or would you have to take a cab?
No bus from my town, but even if there was, it's worse... Port Authority Bus terminal vs. Penn Station. And I'd still need to get on the subway.

I seem to recall Alee posted some kind of bumper bra or foam protection in NYC just for this purpose.
Does that actually work?

Yeah, busses are worse than subway/light rail. . . you have all the yuckyness of who knows what in a packed little box on wheels getting stuck in traffic.
Which reminds me of the time I was on a local Metro bus and saw a homeless guy get up and leave. . . he left a puddle behind on the seat. :ack:
I stopped sitting down on the bus after that.
