View Full Version : So, who has put a deposit down...
It's my fall-back position for early 2009 when my 330i lease is up. No need to put down a deposit.

I'm in a wait-n-see holding pattern

This car is clearly in the wait-n-see category IMO.
I am toying with the idea. It is refundable so not much to lose? If the rag reviews are positive it maybe enough for me to spec one out when the time comes, Feb/March '08.
Holding pattern. Depends on:
Weight
Cost
Rear seat leg- and hip-room
I did a month ago at Sonnen here in Marin. $1K and it is fully refundable. It was before the official press release info came out so I was the first.
Hope its not a repeat of the soft steering, softly sprung 330ci I got in Mid 2000.
Edit: I also can't wait for the first car rag reviews. This will be very telling. Esp some good rags like Evo and Car.

Yeah, but didn't you do the free retrofit?
Yeah, but didn't you do the free retrofit?
I actually did and it was better, but it should have been that way in the first place. I also put on UUC sways but still never liked the way it handled.
I have been spoiled by the crisp handling of the E36 comparably.
I am hoping the 135i does not roll as much but some of the action shots show quite a bit of lean. As in forget over sized tires because they disappear half way up into the wheel well kind of lean.
Time will tell. Like I said my deposit is refundable.
I need to replace my E39 before the 135i comes out... I'd consider it if it was out, but am concerned about rear seat legroom (I've sat in the 5-door and there is almost no rear seat legroom...).
Current list for E39 replacement:
328 or 335 coupe
G35 sedan
New CTS
Will probably be getting the new car in Sept/Oct... I'm currently leaning towards the G35, but still need to test drive the others (and the CTS should be in dealerships in a couple weeks, at least with an automatic).

I have been hearing that the car in person is not that much smaller then the 3 and with the 3's sloping roof compared to the 1's upright look, it might even be more inviting back there.

I could consider the ragtop (but only after finishing up my current ride).
However, just released spy shots of the upcoming Z4 look pretty good, too.
True soft tops are becoming limited in the market - I'm not certain the Zed will be a softie, but two-seaters aren't so bad as retractable steel tops (Merc SL500, Miata, etc.)
At any rate, I buy used, sub 10k examples with the 100k/6 year warranty after the 1st owner's taken the depreciation bath - no need to think about deposits.

Depending on its weight/performance and a closer inspection... My wife will be seeing something new within a year I'd guess.

I did on my June '00 330Ci. It still sucked! :ack:

MAN yours was early. Mine was August!

Yup, it was the first 330Ci delivered to the center. It was supposed to be their demo.
I had a June 2000 build also.
And the retrofit steering, while heavier, was still numb.
God that car sucked.
You guys are bringing back good/bad memories. What really sucked was how much they improved the feel for the next model year (or maybe it was the '03).

I believe people were perfectly happy with 02, right?

I stil kept mine for 3.5 years and got almost 30K out if it.
Was not the best car I ever had but definetly not the worst.
I went backwords like TD to the E36 M3, but it took me 2.5 years longer.
This October will be 4 years and I still love it. I drive it much more then the E46 M3 I have. In fact I will be selling the E46 to get the 135i. I might or might not keep the convertable.

I sold mine a month before the warranty was up. I didn't do as well as you and mine only had 18,000 miles. The color combo made it difficult to sell (Ti. Silver/Tanin Red).

I kicked mine to the curb after 13 months and 11K miles.

I had like 36K on it at the time, but it had an easy combo to sell.
Orient / Black
I wonder if Alee still has his Orient / Grey 02 ci?

I dumped my 2001 and picked up a 2002, which I still have. It's perfect for what it is. And doesn't yet have 30,000 miles.

I had an '00 323i, pre-steering debacle.
The controls were heavy and everything took a deliberate motion to activate, I loved that car, but I ruined it with suspension mods.
As a stock, premium-packaged 323, it was the perfect daily driver, light enough, powerful enough, and it got good gas mileage, 26mpg, while still being fun to drive.
You just couldn't ask it to be a track star, it'd be like asking Eric Clapton to improvise over changes, ain't gonna happen.......

That's why I am missing the 330 atm. I didn't like the steering and body roll, but they improved both of those features dramatically in '02 and it was a great compromise car. And I think the 330 got even better mileage then the 323/325.

I picked up my cabrio in Mar '01 and had no idea how sucky the steering really was until I picked up the Sportwagen 18 months later. I did the retro deal, too, and it definitely helped, but it still was too limp for my tastes. But even with this shortcoming I wish I still kinda had it today, because it was as purty a car as I've ever seen. I still swoon when I see steel grey and tanin pics, although they are definitely a rare site even today.
As for the eins funf und dreizig goes I wouldn't be ready to move on one until November '08 or March '09.
But until I drive it the biggest plus for me about it right now remains that it's not a 3.
With the imminent move to a fow-vay I'd say I'm definitely in a down-sizing mode, even if that doesn't necessarily correlate to less weight.

as the car has already been in Europe for awhile and.......not made them swoon (as the hatchback 1er) i have a serious wait and see attitude.

Yeah, the 1 series hatch didn't make me swoon when I drove it.
More power and a lively suspension/steering would probably wake it up.

i really don't think the car is going to sellout, so i'm in no rush. and that gives it plenty of time for the typical BMW stuff with the first year of a car.
let's see.
first, if it's priced too highly, then there is trunk money. then if it looks too cheap and gets too many complaints, then they upgrade stuff the first two years. plus they bump up the power to get the engine up to date with the rest of the BMW lineup.
it's what i saw with the X3, which is the obvious parallel (both are super entry level vehicles sold in the US to try to get conquest sales into BMW showrooms).

Ah . . . but how much bumping will there be power wise. Its' already getting the same 300hp, 300 lb-ft twin-turbo I-6 that the bigger 3 series is getting. Doesn't seem like a bad engine option right off the bat. Certainly significantly better than the E90's first year engine.
As to the others . . . well, y'all know far far more about BMW's strategies than I do. But if the 1 series was supposed to be the entry level BMW why would they upgrade it much. . . wouldn't that just bump costs up? I mean, it should be nicer than an econo-box but I wouldn't expect it to be anything close to a regular 3 series. . . unless it cost close to a 3 series.
For those that think about the 135i too much, and consider it too carefully it probably want make a lot of sense performance / $$ / practicality wise if the price rises too high. It already seems like a heavy car for its size (yea yea, perhaps not that critical for a road car . . . but) which seems to me to negate one of the pleasant trade-offs for putting up with a smaller, tighter, less useful car: that it should be lighter than bigger cars.
Anyways, I think I'm rambling.
There's a lot that appeals to me about the 135i Coupe in the potential of what the car could be. But there's no way I'd plunk down $$$ right now without being able to test drive and play with one (not that I'm in a position to do so now anyhoo).
