View Full Version : I backed the ZHP into my in-law's civic

It was late last night, I was tired, it is a dark car and he had moved it to another spot. So I backed out of the garage and as I am turning the wheel to the right, bam.

All things considered, it is not bad at all. Well, I was going very slowly. My ZHP has no damage except the rear bumper and even that is very minor. Just a hairline-thin, 6" long "wrinkle" in the paint of the back right of the bumper (just below the black strip), and a very slightly wider gap where it meets the passenger rear wheel well. If I didn't tell you you would have to look very closely to know anything happened. Granted, I've yet to see it in daylight.

My in-law's civic, has far more visible damage as I hit it square on the passeneger side rear door. It has a very large dent, the bump strip on that door is a goner. But still, that is it. Only the door was touched. So absolute worst case, he needs a new rear door. Glad he only drives a Civic.:eeps:

Naturally, I offered to pay for the damamge, but he refuses and says they will just pop it out, no big deal, etc. That would fix most of the damage, but I dunno that it will fix it all. I think it will need to be tweaked some more and likely be repainted. But he may not completely care since his car is ~5 years old and it's a civic in so-so shape. He propably will replace it soon anyhow.

I still feel like a dick, because had I had my head completely turned around (as I usually do), I would have seen it.

Well, lesson learned. That fact that I never have guest cars is no excuse, and the crap lighting is no excuse. I just feel lucky it was as minor as it was.

Pictures to come later.

Does he want to sell the civic? Is it a stick?

Really, sounds like no biggie.

LOL. It's a Canadian Civic and it's a slushie.

Yeah, my car doesn't look bad at all. I think a new clip may fix my bumper missalignment and I can hid the small "scratch" pretty well with some detailing.

Wow, that is impressive.

My FIL is going to take care of this in Montreal when he gets back there.

Sorry to hear about the mishap, FC.

Are you sure you didn't bust a taillight? Woulda been a good excuse to get clears. :)

Phew! It's also a good thing your wife is with child and your FIL is obviously delighted. This happens a year ago and maybe we get to see your picture on TV.....

on Forensic Files.

:D

My FIL is as cool and laid back as it comes - and the guy loves me. He also is not very attached to his cars. They are point A to point B transportation. Prior to his Civic his cars were an Escort and an Elantra.:ack:

FWIW, he told me today on our way to Home Depot that the reason my wife pushed for me to go get milk so late last night was because my MIL wanted it for her coffee this morning.

So it's all her fault, and he feels guilty making you pay.

IMO, you'll be better off in the long run if you force him to let you pay anyway.

Totally. :D

He really isn't that kind of guy, but I agree. I'll just give him a couple of hundred at least. If he really doesn't want the money he can go buy his grandson something nice, I don't care.

Funny tangent: My FIL has always lived a simple life and never splurged on anything and still doesn't. But he retired from a Canadian government job at 59 and gets a pension worth 70% of his highest (last) salary adjusted to inflation for life. Since he retired, it's pretty obvious he realized there is "nothing to save for" anymore and doesn't know what to do with his money. He NEVER lets us pay for anything. He was pissed I took off without him to pick up and pay for a take out order last night. He gives my wife $500 in cash every X-mass, etc. It's just silly.
