Now that the E39 M5 prices might be going back up because they CAN be CPO'ed versus the ugly new non-CPO-able M cars...
Definitely interesting times.
All CTS-Vs have alcantara inserts. Without them, the seats would go from "acceptable" to "absolutely horrible." They are designed for fat people as far as width goes.
The 2004 model is not worth as much as the 2005 model. I don't remember why at the moment, but they fixed a few problems in the brief down time between years.
The 2006 model came with an improved rear differential, but it also came with the LS2 motor instead of the LS6 motor.
Andy, I think you pretty much better figure on searching until you find one without a sun roof. My head scraped the roof for my preferred upright seating position with the seat all the way down. It was aggravating to say the least - especially since I only go the sun roof b/c the wife wanted it.

So 2005 and 2006 are the ones to look for?
Um, sunroof-less CTSV? How many did they make? like 2 in the entire production run?
But yeah, that is probably needed.
The E39 M5 with that sunroof still gives me quite a bit of headroom.
Either way, we won't be getting a big sedan until we have a place...
When I bought my car, I could have purchased any combination of the color and equipment options. You may remember there were four colors and teh sun roof was the only option. (Well, the suspension option existed too, but that was dealer installed). So they did make some number of cars without a sun roof. In fact, I could have taken a sun roofless car from my dealer, but they had to trade to get one with the sun roof. *Shrug*
I wouldn't rule the 2004 out. I would do some research before I bought one though. The engine switch makes some people rule the 2006 out b/c that one (LS2) has a pedestrian engine that goes in trucks and everything else while the LS6 was in the last generation Z06. The LS2 is much smoother.

IIRC, the sunroof made wearing a helmet kind of a pain, but intolerable. Stuka's a couple inches taller than me, though...

as much as i like the LS6 engine, the LS2 has more power throughout the rev range.

How about this one, is this a better buy than that higher mile 06 for the same price?

It has a sun roof, so I would not be interested if I were you. You are simply too tall for that car with a sun roof.
After that, I would find someone that knows the car and ask them how to spot indications of excessive wheel hop. Once I figured out how to do that, I would look over all of the options I could and buy the first one that didn't show any such signs that I found.
Wheel hop *can* be devastating, but most people that bought this car drove it like a Cadillac, not like the muscle car it is. Find one of those and I am pretty certain that it will be dependable until you break it yourself.
